Did anyone else know that Brent Burns was in two episodes of the show Vikings? Was watching the last season and it was like hey, that kinda looks like Burns. Did a quick search and yup it was him.

I'm sure he could slot in somewhere He wouldâve made sense but I imagine theyâre putting a lot of faith in guys over 30 (and Hertl after his 50th knee surgery) to bounce back after injury and produce big time. Maybe tank is too strong but I donât see how anyone expects the worst team in the west to be competitive this year, with the new format and all. In other news Iâve read several things that Pierre-Luc Dubois isnât happy and looking for a trade outta Columbus. Heâs got skill and a heavy game not dissimilar to Hertl. Would be a nice add to the top six and allow Hertl to move back to wing. Again though, would make sense if they were trying to win, which I doubt. And it a not like they have anything to offer for a player of his caliber.

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,
Thereâs a new kid in NHL rinks, and this is fitted with a tiny embedded battery, a circuit board roughly the size of a half-dollar, and 6-inch-long tubes that emit infrared light at 60 pulses per second â fast, yet still two beats behind Connor McDavid on a breakaway...
The space-age pucks, which cost the NHL some $40 each to produce, will make their debut next week in the NHLâs 31 arenas, all part of the league unveiling its long-anticipated Puck and Player Tracking technology for use in broadcasts and, undoubtedly, the tidal wave of legalized betting about to wash over all pro sports.
But letâs save all the data and their various uses for a different day and focus on the puckâs grand makeover. Itâs come a long, long way from days of old. Some of the late-19th-century versions were made of wood. The rubber iteration came along around 1900 when someone shaved off two sides of a ball, a puck emerging from the handiwork.
Rest assured, the new puck will look and sound the same as the old model â 6 ounces, 3 inches wide, 1 inch thick. Based on exhaustive testing, noted Lehanski, players have reported it feels the same on their sticks, fires just like the old version, and bangs off pipes and boards with honest-to-Boom Boom Geoffrion auditory authenticity.

Four teams have been granted provisional relocations for the 2020-21 season: the Binghamton Devils will play in Newark, N.J.; the Ontario Reign will play in El Segundo, Calif.; the Providence Bruins will play in Marlborough, Mass.; and the San Diego Gulls will play in Irvine, Calif.
The Charlotte Checkers, Milwaukee Admirals and Springfield Thunderbirds have elected to opt out of play for the 2020-21 season. All three teams will return to play in 2021-22.

In sum, big names changed teams all over the place. Joe Thornton and Wayne Simmonds signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs, as did TJ Brodie. Anthony Duclair signed in Florida.
Tyler Toffoli left the Canucks and signed in Montreal to play for a Canadiens team who also traded Max Domi for Josh Anderson, and got Jake Allen to back up Carey Price.
Jake Allen takes us somewhere useful here actually. Because goalies boy, goalies played some musical chairs this off-season...
First off, Braden Holtby wasnât re-signed by the Washington Capitals, so he left to sign a two-year deal with the Vancouver Canucks. (Youâre likely familiar with the follow-up here, which is that Henrik Lundqvist actually signed there to back-up young prospect Ilya Samsonov, but has instead had to step aside to get open heart surgery. We wish Hank well in his recovery here.)
So, Holtby to Vancouver. The Canucks, you remember, had a very good goaltender in Jacob Markstrom. Well, funny story, Markstrom signed a six-year deal in Calgary worth six mill a pop.
The Flames used to have Cam Talbot in net, remember him? Yeah he went to Minnesota. There was an opening there because the Wild traded Devan Dubnyk to San Jose, who had goaltending issues of their own (this is some bet on a bounce-back by the Sharks, as Dubnyk was one of three goalies who had a worse save percentage than Martin Jones last season out of the 54 who started at least 24 games).
When Chicago traded Robin Lehner to Vegas last season, they essentially decided to move on from goaltending experience period. While Vegas is left with All The Goalie Experience in Marc-Andre Fleury and Lehner, Chicago is going with none of it, allowing Corey Crawford to walk and sign with the New Jersey Devils for two years at a cap hit of $3.9 million per season.
Malcolm Subban is the remaining Blackhawks goalie with the most experience, at 66 games. Meanwhile, Cory Schneider retired, if youâre wondering why thereâs an opening in New Jersey.
Still with me?
Oh, hereâs one: did you remember that the California teams last season were third-last, second-last and last in the West at last seasonâs pause? Isnât that insane? The dreaded 'California trip' was finally a vacation for NHL teams. But donât rule out something of a bounce-back there.
The Sharks have Erik Karlsson, Brent Burns, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Evander Kane, Logan Couture, Timo Meier, Tomas Hertl â I mean, just boatloads of skill. The word from those in the know is that the Sharks were full of nagging injuries last season which nag no longer. So, do you feel comfortable betting theyâll be Conference-worst awful again? I sure donât.
A few more reminders on our way out the door:
Oliver Ekman-Larsson kind of asked for a trade this summer, but only green-lit two teams: Vancouver and Boston. Both teams made plays for the Coyotes captain, but werenât willing to give up everything Arizona was asking. At some point, the conversations passed an arbitrary OEL-set deadline and nothing happened.
As I see it, both Vancouver and Boston have high expectations, and could very well fall short of those based on off-season moves. The Coyotes look... if I may just come out and be honest here, they look awful. Theyâre gonna need all-world goaltending to sniff playoffs. If any or all of these possibilities become realities â these three teams struggling versus internal expectations â could an OEL deal be brought back to life? I donât see why not.
There are some exciting, exciting young players in the NHL this year, courtesy of this past-summerâs not-at-all rigged draft that saw the brightest star to come into the league in years head to the New York Rangers (I kid, I kid). Alexis Lafreniere, Quinton Byfield, and Tim Stuetzle headline a class of players sure to not just play, but contribute in their first seasons.
In all, that should get you as up to speed as you need to be start getting back engaged here.

Couture: "We have a team here that's going to make the playoffs." Yeah okay. Donât think San Jose is a playoff team but in thinking the top three teams in the division are set with COL, STL, and VGK, the remaining five are a mass of mediocrity. Is it really outta the question the Sharks can rise to the top of that? I ainât betting on it but stranger things have happened.

TORONTO (Jan. 5, 2021) â Colin Wilson has officially announced his retirement from the National Hockey League (NHL) today following 11 NHL seasons and 632 regular-season games.
Born in Greenwich, Connecticut, and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Wilson was drafted seventh overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2008 NHL Draft. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound forward played for two NHL franchises â the Predators and the Colorado Avalanche. Always a reliable contributor to each of his teams, Wilson recorded 286 regular-season points (113-173â286) along with 33 points (17-16â33) in 65 playoff games. His playing career was truncated last season after he underwent double hip surgery in December 2019.

from Michael Traikos of the National Post,
Wearing a hoodie and with a perma-smile peaking out behind an unkempt greying beard, Thornton doesnât look like a guy who has been beaten down by the game. Instead, he looks like someone who has happily spent the past decade living a hedonistic life out of his van on the beach with Brent Burns.
And heâs bringing that surfer-like mentality to Toronto.
Clearly, head coach Sheldon Keefe believes Thorntonâs âno stressâ approach can benefit a Toronto team that is under the gun. Not necessarily on the ice, where a cynic might suggest Thornton lacks the legs and endurance to keep up with Matthews and Marner. But off the ice, where he should be able to calm down Matthews after a loss and be a reminder to Marner that he is playing a game â a game that is supposed to be fun.
âI think (it can be) incredibly contagious,â Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said of Thorntonâs âpositivityâ, âenergyâ and âconfidence.â
Those are all great things. But at the same time, this isnât exactly a team that is lacking in the confidence department. The Leafs know how good they can be. What they donât know is how to get there.
In that way, the team doesnât need a Surfer Joe. They need a Sargent Joe.
