from Patrick Johnston of the Vancouver Province,
The news for the Vancouver Canucks has gone from bad to worse.
Postmedia has confirmed as reported first by TSN’s Farhan Lalji that several COVID-19 cases affecting the NHL club have been identified as the P.1 variant first found in Brazil.
That variant has been growing in number in B.C. over the past month and was recently identified as a major driver of an outbreak that originated in Whistler. Some research has shown the P.1 variant is as much as 2.5 times more transmissible than earlier strains of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
Further, it is expected that more Canucks players will be confirmed as positive when the NHL updates its COVID-19 protocol list on Saturday afternoon.
Four Canucks games have already been postponed because of the team’s outbreak, which has seven players and one coach confirmed as positive cases already. And a player on the team’s taxi squad has been identified as a high-risk close contact, a source confirmed.
On Friday, the NHL told Postmedia they want to wait and see if more players and staff tested positive for the virus before making further decisions on the Canucks’ schedule.
But with so many players now likely out for two weeks or more, it will be difficult for the Canucks to return to action by next weekend, putting their chances of playing a full 56-game season in serious doubt.

So the Sharks are in that odd situation. They are on the cusp of the postseason but should not trade away any draft picks to make a run. Hertl contract expires soon and he would bring value. I think you have to say goodbye to him now. The Sharks are not a player or two away from a deep run. Get something for Duby if you can.

Wouldn't be a bad idea but with so many team under cap pressure and no way the cap goes up next year, taking on players with term next year is less desirable than in year's past. Obviously there'd be takers for Hertl any way you slice it but I just wonder if the kind of return you'd want to get for a player of Hertl's age and calibre isn't there this year.

Only problem I foresee is I don't think the sharks can afford to ship out any bodies because of the expansion draft at the end of the season. With the stipulations the players to be available have to have X amount of nhl time and contract on the books etc. Its going to be very interesting to see what trickery DW has to pull out of his ass because of the amount of players with contract beyond this season. I would absolutely hate to see Hertle go and I actually see him as the captain and inherit the team from Cooter. But he would bring back a premium (i.e. Goody to Tampa).

from Frank Seravalli of TSN,
Over the last five NHL trade deadlines, there has been an average of 13 trades of significance in the month leading up to Deadline Day.
Just one week away from TradeCentre, there have been exactly two this season. Eric Staal is scheduled to make his debut on Monday night for Montreal after his March 26 trade from Buffalo for third and fifth-round picks. The Rangers dealt Brendan Lemieux the next day to Los Angeles for a fourth-round pick.
That’s it.
There is no shortage of limiting factors: the flat salary cap; that a shortened schedule reduces an acquisition’s impact; that nearly half the NHL is operating in long-term injured reserve; diminished financial incentive to win an extra playoff round with arena capacity restrictions; tightened internal team budgets; a looming Expansion Draft.
Then there is the list of firm buyers, which seems to be way down compared to a typical season.
Given all that, market prices for players have not yet seemed to adapt to those factors.
“Teams would like me to pay full freight, essentially normal historical trade deadline prices, for what amounts to a half tank of gas,” one GM said last week.

The Ottawa Senators have relieved goaltending coach Pierre Groulx of his duties and re-assigned him to a scouting/development position. Zac Bierk has been named the new goaltending coach. "Unfortunately, a number of our goaltending performances this season have been underwhelming," said Pierre Dorion. "I think very highly of Pierre Groulx, he's as dedicated and tireless a worker as anyone in the organization, but we recently reached a point where we thought a fresh outlook could help return some stability to our crease."

Why couldn't they have been somewhere else to be in a different division lol.

I would say why not, but you know DW will throw a fat contract at him once the season is over if Hall has any kind of success here. Also I hope the highest bid is a low 3rd and a bag of pucks... Because fuck Buffalo lol.
