It was nice to see the Sharks from earlier this year, show up in the playoffs. That was fucking awesome.

The Sharks scored a 3v3, a 4v4, a 5v5, a 5v4 and a 5v6 goals - all of them came on different strengths.
This is the first ever playoff game since the on-ice stats have been accounted (1999) that featured a 3v3, 4v4 and a 5v5 goal This is the first ever overall game since the on-ice stats have been accounted (1999) that featured these five goals types by the same team.

Great game last night night, except from the refs, awful as usual. If this is how the team regularly plays in the playoffs, my 'homer' bracket looks a lot more possible!

Pavelski got a few teeth knocked out on that goal. That's gotta hurt Pavelski's goal even made it onto TMZ. Man that was great. We've all seen Pavs come up with some uncanny tip-in goals, but never seen such a key goal get tipped in with a jaw. Ha! He'll take it. Really rowdy intense crowd last night. Welcome back, playoff hockey! Sharks played a very solid game one all around. We know what they're capable of.

- No sight of Joakim Ryan after early 1st period. Either Burns, Karlsson or both seemed to be on the ice the entire game. Both were outstanding. Vlasic got a ton of ice as well.
- Joe Thornton got 5 SOGs and played a solid game I thought. Kane played inspired, 5 SOGs himself. Couture had 4 SOGs.
- Timo Meier's left hand looked like it was bothering him. Was bumping everything in sight, strong skating but struggled with shooting.
- Tomas Hertl is a hockey stud.

Another observation: this is the first ever game where the Sharks managed to score 5 on Vegas.

from David Schoen of the Las Vegas Review-Journal,
As the Golden Knights stumbled toward the finish line of the regular season, the common refrain was they could find their game when it mattered most.
But as the postseason opened Wednesday, all the problems of the past two weeks remained.
The Knights were unable to match the intensity of a San Jose squad intent on making a statement and lost 5-2 in a hostile SAP Center to open the Western Conference quarterfinals.
Mark Stone notched both goals for the Knights, and Max Pacioretty finished with two assists. Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is here Friday at 7:30 p.m.
“They outplayed us in every facet of the game tonight,” coach Gerard Gallant said. “They played hard. They worked and competed, and we weren’t near good enough. They did a good job. They played hard. We weren’t close to good enough, and we’ll do better next game.”

The young mail guy at my work and I talked about this and I said it wasn't a big deal because the Sharks can roll their Big 3 D men big minutes. It would be similar to what the Ducks did with Pronger and Niedermeyer where one of the 2 of them was on the ice basically the entire game. The advantage the Sharks have is they can rely on Burns, Vlasic and Karlsson big minutes and have the other D men fill in. The Knights seemed to be targeting Braun last night and he got blasted a couple of times. Thornton centering the 3rd line is what I have pointed to as a possible reason for the Sharks to go on a run this year. Jumbo in previous playoffs always faced the opponents top D pair and shutdown line and now will have a better matchup. Meier was a beast last night with 9 hits. When it got to 3 on 3 last night and the Sharks put out Hertl, Burns and Karlsson it was almost unfair. Jones out playing Fleury was completely unexpected. That being said Vegas hit a couple of posts and missed a wide open net a couple of times as well.

It's a great dimension to have. Jones and some other Sharks played strong, but Burns and Karlsson were the clear difference makers in last nights game, IMO. Hope that can continue. Fleury looked very mortal, especially in the 2nd when he was down at our end. He's still damn good but I'd say he's not 100%. There were a few playoff games last spring against Vegas where Fleury was the best fkn hockey player on the ice.

My only issue with the playing of the big three a lot is seeing Karlsson on the PK, which he saw more of than anyone yesterday. At least Burns is physical and covers a lot of ice. With Vlasic-Dillon-Braun, they shouldn't need Karlsson to log much time killing penalties. They need to watch Burns' ice time too, 28 minutes is too much for a deep blueline and the way he plays, there's no conserving energy. As for Joakim Ryan, he took a few big hits early, most notably from Reaves, and didn't play again. I don't think he was right to go in. If he does, he probably knows he's not making it to the end. Tim Heed should be ready to go. Nice to see Kane, Hertl, Burns, Karlsson, and Vlasic with two points each in the first game. Getting big players playing has always been a playoff issue here.

They already have a tendency for D zone turn overs and odd man rushes...being tired will possibly increase that, especially with Burns. Also, I think Dillon and Braun are steady enough to make that play not necessary. Dillon’s their toughest D’man so having him out there against the bullies from Vegas might be wise.

Also, I think Dillon and Braun are steady enough to make that play not necessary. Dillon’s their toughest D’man so having him out there against the bullies from Vegas might be wise. None of them played huge minutes. The only one I would worry about burning out is Karlsson just because he has been out of the lineup. I think the reason they have him out on the PK is because of his speed and his ability to move the puck out of the zone. Dillsn and Braun are steady but neither one is fast. Braun took by far the most big hits of the night in Game 1. Burns played 28 minutes in Game 1. Karlsson played 26 minutes. Vlasic played 23 minutes. Out of curiosity I looked back at the playing time from last playoffs and Burns was usually around 25 minutes and Vlasic was around 23 minutes in games that didn't go into OT. So that isn't exactly a major increase in ice time for Burns. When the Sharks played in Vegas in January and won 3-2 Burns played 30 minutes and Karlsson played 30 minutes (Vlasic didn't play I don't recall why).
