Thanks, we will! Yeah, I've been to Munich and Bavaria a few times. This will be my first visit to Berlin this trip. We'll be taking kind of a circular route through Germany, starting in Munich, heading towards Berlin, across the country to Cologne then back down to Bavaria and end up back in Munich. Very cool...I didn’t care for Berlin, hope its better for you. We took the train everywhere also. I wish they had trains like that here. I bought a one month Europass and it was worth every penny. If there's food and beer, it'll all be good!

When we have a population density like the Germans we should have trains like the Germans.
Otherwise Southwest is faster and cheaper and almost as convenient.

That makes sense, especially for the Western states. I’ve always heard it said that about 60% of our population lives East of the Mississippi River (which is roughly only 1/3 of our land area) so maybe some quality regional train system makes sense in the Eastern USA. I’m guessing the Eastern US and Germany have somewhat comparable population density numbers. Germany is about 150psqm but I cant find a good number for just the Eastern US.

Whole Germany is less than 1/20th of the contiguous US in area, smaller than Montana, about the same as Carolinas and Virginia combined. 85 million people are stuffed in it.
The only area the quality regional train system makes sense is along the coast between Washington DC and Boston, only going as deep as maybe Roanoke, Pittsburgh, Albany and Springfield. That would cover the area about 2 times larger than Germany with about 3/4 of the population.

I know some of you mock us retired folks but we face some serious issues sometimes. Today, I was out back smoking some chicken and had a nice cold Fullers London Pride beer to keep me company...but it just wasn’t sitting right on my stomach. So, I switched to red wine...about halfway through the glass I realized it was a little to warm outside for red wine (chilled white wine isn’t an option because red wines for drinking and white wines for cooking fish). So, third time being the charm, I hit the sweet spot with some Basil Hayden bourbon over a large whisky rock...🥃
That’s how us retired folk kill an hour on what used to be a work day 😎

Pass on chicken Properly smoked/cooked bone in chicken is great. I smoke/grill/BBQ at least 5 days a week so I had to come up with options other than beef and pork...which I love. We’ve also been grilling/smoking a lot of fish that we’re really enjoying. Only thing I’ve found that I just can’t get a taste for is venison...and of course there’s huge white tails all over my property

My cooking/food memories as a kid are my dads friends (my dad was a great man but he couldn’t bbq at all) bbq’ing pheasants, ducks and frog legs on our hunting trips in the Central Valley. Great times, but not near as cool as smoked chicken in Estonia

Okay, go buy a bottle of Noah’s Mill bourbon
It was recommended by the establishment I am currently at in Louisville and is absolutely delicious... and about 113 proof.

Dear Sharkie -
Need advice. this past summer I began drinking fruit infused beer and really enjoyed deep plump favor paired with familiar beefy 8% IPA. two close drinking buddies are German purity law of 1516 abiders and insist I'm a pussy for drinking fruit in my beer - but mostly looked the other way all summer. Now we're moving into winter months and I still can't get back into a pure IPA mode, like I had promised myself. This 21st Amendment Blood Orange IPA is so accessible, yet 'Hanz/Franz' just give me shit about all the orange cans. Should I reset with a Pilsner? Pliny with a Whisky chaser? Or maybe the two old crusty German fucks are just being dicks about all this? What would you do, Sharkie? Thanks in advance!

I say drink whatever you like...nothing wrong with a gal enjoying a beer Seriously, if you don’t like beer much anymore, maybe switch gears completely...this is the great age of bourbon 🥃

Drink whatever you want, but get a couple of Andechs Doppelbocks and/or Ayinger Celebrators for the Fritzes. That will shut them up.

He was probably drunk, but a friend of mine said drinking fruit infused beer is like insisting your wife wear high-heels in the bedroom. Too indulgent maybe, a sign of over using the good life? But yes - maybe a good bourbon, pure IPA is just common sense, not indulgence.

I’ve been enjoying the recent trend of beers brewed with coffee, and still stand by the Elysian brewing Split Shot as one of my favorite beers. It is the great age of whiskey and whisky too. There are some very quality stouts being finished in whiskey and whisky barrels too. Also in Louisville I had a delicious cream ale finished in a bourbon barrel with additional vanilla. Lexington brewing Kentucky Vanilla Barrel Cream Ale. That beer was very good too! TRO

I recently started seeing Ayinger as the only decent bavarian option at my local Whole Foods. Glad to have found it as even Weihenstephaner is not always super available.
