And ideally you do have a couple skill guys that also play that way so they command their own respect and it's not one player having to go attack everyone (or Haley type that you risk being exposed with a garbage forward on the ice).

I don't dispute that. But a comment was made that he needs to not go after guys making less than him, and as the only shark that actually goes after guys it's kind of hard to draw that line. We need more players of his ilk to distribute the physical presence.

I don't think there's any chance Kane moves. He fights Reaves and Chara and gets hurt and everybody complains it was selfish. He doesn't fight Reaves and Chara, everyone says he's been wussified by the culture here. Can't-win situation. Obviously needed more from him in the playoffs, injuries or not, but he had a solid season on the whole and came as close to his ceiling as he ever would, or has, anywhere. The NHL knows he's where he should be. His value will be lower everywhere else but San Jose.

Karlsson's play might just have played into Wilson's hand. This was not a good year for him. Took a long time to find his groove and when he did, he got hurt and never recovered. With his history, he no doubt lowered his price. Does Wilson resign him? At what point does Wilson have to just to make the trade worth it? At what point does Wilson have to walk away and say it was worth a shot? Obviously the wildcard of the offseason.

As for Jumbo and Pavs, I think we'd all want to see Wilson to take a firm stand like he did with Marleau (which was the right move) and get them back for negligible deals but that ain't happening. There's too much respect for those two to see them coming back for 5M between them. Pavelski had a great year going until he got hurt, JT was doing the same but he clearly ran out of gas in the playoffs. If Pavelski comes back they should swap him and Labanc, Labanc still bothers the heck out of me but he's proven he's got the game to be a top six winger. Pavelski would probably benefit from lesser matchups. If Thornton comes back they should probably watch his schedule, sit him out games here and there, maybe just leave him at home for those few big road trips. Veteran guys like that though, they usually do what they want and no coach or GM is stopping it.

Meier earned a big raise, Labanc gets one too. Suomela, Chartier, and Gambrell can stick around too as depth. Not sure any of them have a future as more than that but might as well see what you have first. None of them are going to demand much anyway. Ryan, Nyquist, and Donskoi can all walk. Nyquist was just bad as a deadline acquisition. Maybe Donskoi and Suomela are tied together so if one goes, both go, who knows. I don't think I'd miss them.

UFA I'd target would be Micheal Ferland. Absolute bull on the ice but can play and compliment more skilled guys. Richard Panik would be a buy-low kind of guy. I think he plays a rugged game but with some finish too. Kurtis Gabriel is a real tough guy and has showed well in the role in the NHL. For no other reason I'd like to see that in the lineup, probably as a replacement for Haley.

I agree with John's take. I think Labanc sinking or swimming with 2nd line defensive responsibility will be huge. And I'd agree that Pavs should really be on line 3 and Thornton almost on line 4. Figure you could then give a couple young guns a shot to play with a hall of famer and see if you strike paydirt like Seto and JR back in the day.

Both Johnsson and Kapanen are RFA. You trading for their rights or offer sheeting?

I hope we see some offer sheets, this RFA class is loaded, better than the UFA class for sure. Especially with Marner up, some team with just the right offer could probably snag one of those two guys.

Ferland I can see staying in CAR but Gabriel shouldn’t be hard to get, jut give him a raise, some term, and a full time gig. This team needs to get tougher and start bullying rather than being bullied.

Kane has a very solid regular season. I don’t mind him fighting Chara after he took the headshot and I don’t mind him fighting Reaves either. He just was not very good in the postseason where the sharks needed him. When Vlassic and Pavs has more points than Kane all things considered something is very wrong.
