from Travis Yost of TSN,
Minnesota Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk led National Hockey League goalies in games played (67) last season, and finished second to Montreal’s Carey Price in usage, playing just 25 fewer minutes.
Dubnyk and Price were absolute workhorses for their respective teams, but that term has certainly become more of a relative one in the NHL over the years. As frequently as we saw both of these netminders in the crease last season, their workload pales in comparison to the burden placed on the position just a decade ago.
For context, consider Dubnyk and Price’s usage relative to their peers in the 2007-08 season. Playing nearly 3,900 minutes in a season is a tremendous amount nowadays, but it would have only been good enough for eighth and ninth 12 seasons ago. Goaltenders like Martin Brodeur (Devils), Evgeni Nabokov (Sharks), and Ryan Miller (Sabres) started nearly every single game for their respective teams, and were pulled only in the most extreme of circumstances.
The position has changed. Teams are still on the hunt for superstar goaltenders, but teams are also becoming increasingly conscious about workload, burnout rates and the heightened risk of injuries for their primary puck stoppers.

From Stanley Cup champions to Vezina Trophy winners to all-stars, the NHL has many great goalies. NHL Network producers and analysts chose the top 10 goalies in the League for a special program that premiered Sunday as the fourth in a nine-part series leading up to the regular season. Here is the list:
The San Jose Sharks goalies weren't listed.
I was hoping Aaron Dell would be on the list but not a chance

Appreciate Fug posting it, but pretty superficial shitty job by NHL.Com on shark prospects:
They say
1 - Dylan Gambrell (I think Antti Suomela is more ready, Gambrell not impressive to me) 2- Ryan Merkley (A troubled kid, 'statistically stalled', great promise but stock going down) 3 -Jonathan Dhalen (Looked small, weak when I saw him play on Cuda.. Canucks gave up on him. got to have more than just a cocky attitude and your dad being a Shark legacy) 4 - Alex True (agree with only this one, crafty but needs bigger shoulders to make in the NHL. Good shot for 4C but he needs strength to tie up opponents in the dot after the draw, like a big plug Eric Fehr would do at 4C) 5- Mario Ferraro (ok at NCAA level but no way to tell if he can translate all that to NHL. Huge jump for a small blueliner. He's maybe a 15 on the prospect depth charts, not proven at all)
My List: 1 - Antti Suomela (Roy quoted he needs to "Figure out the quickness inside the smaller NHL rinks..". Great skater and shot, just having trouble with the small rink. Better, bigger, smoother than Gambrell IMHO)
2 - Ivan Chekhovich - Never seen him play but impeccable hockey resume since being drafted. DW quotes about 'made the team in Camp' last fall but sent him back for maturing. then tore up the QMJHL with 105 points. We're ready, Ivan!) 3 - Joachim Blitchfeld - Another Checkhovich type, Tore it up in WHL last season, a scoring machine that has further matured. 4 - Alex True - see above. very soft hands for being 6'5".
5 - Sasha Chmelevski - Career season in the OHL last year, then played only 6 games with Cuda and had 5 points, stood out, ready for next level.
Sharks aren't known for homegrown, but this may be the year, they have 3 great 'Draft + 3 season' guys that have only improved a lot since being drafted. And DW's famous quote " Integrating in wingers the NHL is probably the easiset thing to do.." Still say Sharks get 40 goals from the above list this season. Maybe I'm just too damn optimistic, but it would be thrilling to see homegrown pay off this season.

Only thing I've seen was the Petes opened camp without him because he'll be in the Sharks' camp.

Hertl and Meier are doing pretty good, chalk those up as wins. But I would definitely like to see some home grown wingers inserted in the line-up. I don't think the sharks can afford having to many centers on the wing now that Pavs is gone.

I agree this would be huge to help make up for Pavs, Donkey and Boedker moving out. And hope that Meier, Labanc grow a bit to eat some of the rest of that gap.

RALEIGH, NC - Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed goaltender Cam Ward to a one-day contract and that Ward will retire from the National Hockey League as a member of the Hurricanes.
"Cam was a cornerstone for this organization for more than a decade," said Waddell. "From his 'Cam's Champs' program to his efforts with the Hurricanes Foundation and time spent teaching at our hockey camps, he had a tremendous impact on this community. We're proud that he has chosen to retire with the Carolina Hurricanes."

from Tim Campbell of NHL.com,
Patrik Laine, Kyle Connor and the Winnipeg Jets figure to soon feel a heightened sense of urgency with each unrestricted free agent forward unsigned and the season approaching, coach Paul Maurice said.
"The pressure on both sides kind of comes at the same time, that the closer you get to the season, the more pressure comes on the team and the player to get a contract signed," coach Paul Maurice told NHL.com in a recent interview. "We'll see that mount and we're hopeful (they'll be signed) by the time the puck drops. You want everybody at camp, absolutely, but you really hope everybody's done by the time the season starts."...
Laine and Connor are among the prominent unsigned restricted free agents. They include forwards Mitchell Marner of the Maple Leafs, Mikko Rantanen of the Colorado Avalanche, Brayden Point of the Lightning, Brock Boeser of the Vancouver Canucks and Matthew Tkachuk of the Calgary Flames, and defensemen Ivan Provorov of the Philadelphia Flyers, Charlie McAvoy of the Boston Bruins and Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
"The view from the outside might be that there's something wrong because none of these guys are signed," Maurice said. "The truth of the matter is that it must be completely normal because none of these guys are signed.
"When you look at the block of players, not just our two ... that are all in the same boat, you would say we're no more worried than anybody else in this position. If yours were the last two guys who weren't signed, you'd be concerned because there would at least be contracts out there that would tell you where the lamp post is. Everybody wants these contracts done but we all knew this was going to be late, that it wasn't going to happen early because they're almost moving en masse. I think once one or two go, they'll all line up."

It was about Ryan Merkley and the Peterbourogh Pete's refusing him a spot on their roster The last I read the Sharks planned on him being with the Barracuda this year. Merkley just turned 19 two weeks ago. played 6 games (4 playoff) with Barracuda last spring, but *think* DW still has an option to play Merkley in the OHL again, if its a full season commitment. I'd like to see him finally have a solid year in the OHL and maybe get a chance to play in the holiday WJCs (could he make the CDN WJC roster, John96?). Play a ton and lead. Legs seem fine, but DW should make sure this kids head gets screwed on right by 21, eh?
