It turns out that Merkley is not eligible to play for Barracuda - has to turn 20 first. So he's likely to be back to the OHL.

Meanwhile in San Jose, Sharks fifth year goaltender coach authors plan to boldly improve on 2018-19 teams .894 SV%. FU Johan Hedberg! Sharpen up the crease this season or be gone! Can't believe he survived the summer. I agree but the defense owns some of this. And yeah I am talking to you Brent Burns.

Mummmaybe 40% defense? they suffered some hang out to dry moments, but many times laid some big eggs in the crease also last season. how many times did we see a quick early goal by the visitors change games early? It's like they couldn't get fully ready by 7:35. and BOTH your #1 and #2 goalies having career worst SV% years at the same time is inexcuseable to me at the NHL level. notice they don't mention Hedberg's name much on the broadcasts? why is that? seems to fly under the radar a bit.

So I'm not that smart nor good at math. But how in the hell does Toronto stay north of 10 million over the salary cap. Any way other than trading a player(s) for picks? I know the LTIR gives some relief above the cap, but not 10 mil worth. Granted its Toronto and I'm glad its not the sharks... Just a head scratchier is all.

They explicitly added Horton to Clarkson for this kind of accounting gymnastics, and there's a genuine injury on Hyman as well.

ARLINGTON, Va. – Washington Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov has released the following statement on the National Hockey League’s three game suspension:
“I have decided to accept the NHL’s suspension today. I am once again sorry that I have disappointed my family, my teammates, and the Capitals organization and fans. I promise to do everything in my power to win you back with my actions both on and off the ice. I also understand that I am fortunate to have an opportunity to make things right. Thanks to the Capitals, NHL, and NHLPA, I have taken many steps in the right direction and I’m confident that I will continue on that path. I am grateful for everyone’s support and I’m looking to move forward from this point. While I can appreciate that people may have additional questions, I will not be commenting further on this matter.”

from Rick Westhead of TSN,
Former Chicago Blackhawks legend and Hockey Hall of Fame member Stan Mikita tested positive for chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, the brain-withering disease linked to repetitive brain trauma in contact sports, researchers and his family announced Friday night in Chicago.
Mikita becomes the 11th known former NHL player, and the first member of the Hall of Fame, to have tested positive for CTE.
Dr. Ann McKee, director of the BU CTE Center, VA-BU-CLF Brain Bank, and chief of neuropathology for the VA Boston Healthcare System, discussed the findings Friday night as requested by Mikita's family during the Concussion Legacy Foundation's Chicago Honors dinner.

In Mother Russia only the strong survive with a AK-47
from Dan Gartland of Sports Illustrated,
Most hockey teams have a totem of some sort that they award every night to the player who had the best game. No one has a trophy quite like Izhstal Izhevsk, though.
The Russian club, which plays in the second-tier VHL, unveiled a new postgame award this week after defeating Chelmet. It’s not a hat, or a jacket, or a rock or any of the other things NHL teams pass around the dressing room. No, goalkeeper Saveli Kononov was feted for his strong performance in net by receiving an AK-47....
“If we play poorly, they will shoot us,” the players joked...

from Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun,
Thursday the team reported for medicals and that sense of optimism for the big picture under GM Ken Holland was in place to some extent in the community. Not so much for the season at hand.
The city definitely isn’t giddy as the boys are back in town to face the prospects of becoming the first team in National Hockey League history to miss the playoffs in 14 of 15 seasons.
Let’s not try to kid anybody here. The fans, who have sold out Oilers games throughout the Decade of Darkness, are somewhere between fatalistic and pessimistic.
It’s difficult to find a preseason prognosticator picking the Oilers in the playoffs and, as they saying goes in the ticket business, good seats are still available.
The thing is, though, that it doesn’t much matter what the mood and the attitude might be outside the dressing room. At this point it’s how the team sees itself.
There are generally 31 optimistic teams heading into training camp but this appears to be a very sober, serious group that new general manager Ken Holland and new head coach Dave Tippett will see gathered on the ice at Rogers Place Friday morning for the first time.

I knew that... I was under the impression that the LTIR relief is a percentage of the actual salary that allows you above the cap and not the full amount. Is that wrong?

ST. PAUL -- Minnesota Wild General Manager Bill Guerin today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed defenseman Jared Spurgeon to a seven-year, $53,025,000 million contract extension ($7,575,000 million average annual value) that goes through the 2026-27 season.

I knew that... I was under the impression that the LTIR relief is a percentage of the actual salary that allows you above the cap and not the full amount. Is that wrong? This is from a website called Cap Friendly What is LTIR? When a player has an injury of which they are expected to miss a minimum of 10 NHL games and 24 days in the NHL season, the team can place them on long term injured reserve (LTIR). LTIR can be used to exceed the salary cap. LTIR is a very complicated aspect of the NHL operations and the vast majority of details are not specified in the CBA. When a player is placed on LTIR, their cap hit remains on the teams cap payroll and it continues to count as it always did. It also does not provide the club with additional cap-space savings that can be banked for future use while the team operates above the salary cap. Instead, LTIR provides relief if the club's averaged club salary, or payroll, begins to exceed the upper limit. The amount of relief that the club receives is calculated on the day the player is placed on LTIR. There are three equations that are used to determine the LTIR relief, the first, the basic equation, can be used during the season and during the off-season. The second, the training-camp equation, can be used on the final day of the off-season in preparation for the first day of the season. The third formula is used when the team already has a player on LTIR. When a player is deemed fit to play, the team must activate them. www.capfriendly.com/ltir-faq

Sad but kind of ironic; Mikita used to wear the biggest helmet in the league back in the 60's and 70's. saftey conscious parents would make their hockey kids wear a 'Mikita Helmet'. Look up an old photo.

Another dust speckle settles:
Charlie McAvoy signs in Boston for 3x4.9M, a tad below what Werenski got in Cbus.
One thing about these contracts is their structure. Werenski's third year is $7M, that makes his QO a steep 7M. McAvoy's even sharper - 7.3M for the 3rd year and the QO.
And that reminds us that Timo Meier's QO after the four years of his extension is ... $10M (4+4+6+10).
