Turns out the kid who was killed last week in an accident was not riding his motorcycle. He was a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Not that it makes any difference but since his Mom supported his decision to ride many years ago she does not carry the guilt she would have. Lots of kids showed up so the support was awesome. That's terrible. Makes me cognizant of how dangerous it can be just walking or being on the roads. I run and am always very careful to watch for cars/run against traffic so I can more easily see erratic behavior coming at me, but even so there are so many people out there driving like complete meth heads. Glad mon has less guilt though I'm sure this is still unbearable grief. One of my mom's cousin's lost their daughter at age 17. This was 20 years ago now and they still carry it with them.

Yesterday in San Francisco a young couple from Clovis was walking in the cross-walk enjoying their third anniversary. Some woman in a Tesla ran a red light and caused an accident. The couple was hit in the cross-walk. The husband has passed away and the wife is still in critical condition. One minute they are posting pictures and videos on social media of their trip and in an instant everything changes. Heartbreaking tragedy. Yeah that sucks. This happened to my Uncle the night before valentines day and the day before his 50th wedding anniversary. Walking across (in a crosswalk) PCH in Laguna Beach with his wife after dinner. The other thing I have noticed in cities is the scooter craze. No helmet and basically no rules. There has to be a surge in death and injuries on these... And the poor young man that was struck in Denver last Monday is just another statistic in a bad trend: kdvr.com/2019/04/08/spike-in-pedestrian-fatal-crashes-this-year-in-denver/

Took my oldest to the airport today...he left for the first part of his ROTC/Marine Corps officer/aviation training. At this point it looks like we’ll only see him at Christmas breaks from college for the next four years, then he’s committed to the Marines for 8 years after that. I’m very proud of him, but its harder then I thought it would be to see him go...my wife's in bed crying

You two raised a good man and he has a solid path ahead of him. Congrats to you both.

Apparently where the accident happened is a known high collision area in the city and it's largely been left as is (I think their goal had been to advocate for infrastructure improvements to avoid this type of collision).. Doesn't help that the person was speeding as well.

Elon Musk's groupies were quick to defend him. The Tesla driver was speeding and ran a red light and arrested for vehicular manslaughter.

I had visions of Silicon Valley and someone losing control of the Tesla in super mode or whatever the fuck it was. That acceleration is apparently a bit much for the dweebs of SF to handle, I suppose.

Yup, by law the owner is limited to only $10,000 in liability for an uninsured driver. Unclear if these single day on-line rentals have any kind of insurance requirement. The damages in a case like this are in the millions of dollars.

A video was released showing her trying to protect her husband. Just terrible. I saw the description and decided to not even watch it. My wife went through her social media and was showing me all of the pictures they had taken in SF together before the accident and my wife was crying her eyes out. We have crossed that very street hundreds of times.

What I still find absolutely astonishing is that his Tears in the Rain scene in Blade Runner at the end was improvised completely. It was this scene specifically that defined Hauer's career for decades afterward. Hauer, who died on July 19 at the age of 75, went on to have a long, legendary career that included dozens of film and television roles. Today, he remains best known for the "Tears in the Rain Monologue." Here's the most iconic piece of it, which Hauer delivers in the pouring rain with a searing intensity: I've seen things, you people wouldn't believe, hmm ... Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion ... I've watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate ... All those moments, will be lost in time like tears in rain What's most incredible is that the poetry of this speech was written by Hauer himself. There was originally a longer version of the speech in the script, but Hauer rewrote and improvised a shorter, more beautiful version. It's a stunning moment—one that captures man and machine, life and death in an elegant, concise way. As he later explained in an interview with Radio Times, Hauer kept two lines about attack ships and C-beams and wrote the rest himself, including the beautiful tears in the rain moment: It was Hauer’s final addition to the script – the “tears in rain” line – that really sealed the speech’s status; on the day of filming itself, crew members allegedly applauded and cried when the scene was completed. “For the end line I was hoping to come up with one line where Roy, because he understands he has very little time, expresses one bit of the DNA of life that he’s felt,” Hauer says. “How much he liked it. Only one life.”
