A stray cat just wandered into the 3-Dot Lounge, so that makes two of us. He leaped upon the bar and ordered the Roger Goodell, a tasteless concoction that makes your tongue feel like sandpaper.
There’s the NFL commissioner on a nearby television screen, oblivious to the COVID-19 crisis, making it sound as if his April 23-25 draft is beautifully timed. Not only that, he’s going to chastise any league representatives who question its timing. Disgusting, isn’t it?
The problem is, there’s really nothing else to talk about. All these projections on when the NBA, Major League Baseball and other sports will resume play, or how — total conjecture. You’d find more clarity in a fogbank. So allow this column some quick takes on quarterbacks:
Marcus Mariota: The sooner he starts for Las Vegas (oh my God), the better. Derek Carr is a likable fellow, but he’s had his turn with the Raiders. Let’s see something new. You know that’s what Jon Gruden has in mind. ... Jimmy Garoppolo: Get off his back, everyone. He’s going to be fine, the Niners are lucky to have him, and there are many excellent wide receivers in this draft. ... Tom Brady: I’ve always liked him, but wow — boring choice. That garish Tampa Bay uniform suggests some guy working behind a pizza counter. ... Kyler Murray: It was a gift. Fell right out of the sky. Arizona worked a trade for All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins, and if Larry Fitzgerald postpones his retirement plans for a year, that’s one hell of a pair. ... Deshaun Watson: You have to believe the rumors about his desire for a New England gig. Arizona flat-out stole Hopkins from Houston ... Justin Herbert: Let him land in that No. 6 slot with the Chargers. Sounds absolutely right.
Here’s the deal if the NFL expands to a 17-game schedule, now a possibility as early as 2021: If the players approve, from the safety angle, no more debate is necessary. This is the one major sports league that doesn’t have an overly long schedule. There’s always a cry for more football, right through the Super Bowl. What remains astonishingly lame: The NFL doesn’t wipe out its exhibition season altogether. Eliminate that nonsense and an 18-game schedule would work. ... Weekend highlights on NBC Sports Bay Area: At 4 p.m. Saturday, the Warriors-Celtics game from December 2015, a double-overtime win that extended Golden State’s season-opening record to 24-0. No team ever put more passion into the regular season than those Warriors. They were possessed, and that 73-win surge was a tribute to professionalism and pure desire. The following night, in Milwaukee, would end a seven-game trip and bring the season’s first loss. But check that Boston game to see how badly the Warriors wanted to make history. They should have no regrets. ... Then on Sunday, starting at 9:30 a.m., it’s Games 1, 4, 5 and 7 from the Giants’ 2014 World Series against Kansas City. ... Readers have inquired about Joe Panik, recently noted in the Sporting Green’s “this day in history” feature. He signed a minor-league deal with Toronto but has been placed on the 40-man roster, a good sign. ... The power of Huey Lewis: The video of “Her Love is Killin’ Me,” from his new album, features Joe Montana, Bruce Bochy, Jimmy Buffett, Michael Keaton, Brad Paisley and Jimmy Kimmel, among other notables. Definitely worth a look on YouTube. ... MLB has canceled its scheduled games in Mexico City, Puerto Rico and London, but hopes remain for the Aug. 13 game between the Yankees and White Sox in Dyersville, Iowa, where “Field of Dreams” was filmed. The site adjoins a cornfield and has long been a tourist attraction; an 8,000-seat stadium was built for this and future MLB visits. ... Always good for a cheer-up, easily found online: The Batting Stance Guy, featuring Danville’s Gar Ryness and his amazing ability to mimic stances new and old. Can’t recommend it highly enough. ... April marks my 47th year at the Chronicle, exclamation point, and I’ve never been more proud of the product. In the most difficult of times, the staff’s dedication has soared above and beyond.

Former New Orleans Saints kicker Tom Dempsey, who famously made a 63-yard field goal in 1970 despite being born without toes on his right kicking foot, has died due to complications of the coronavirus, his daughter said. He was 73.
Ashley Dempsey said Sunday that her father tested positive for the coronavirus a little more than a week ago.
Dempsey had been battling Alzheimer's disease and dementia. He was a resident at the Lambeth House senior living center in New Orleans, which has been hit hard by the virus. More than 50 residents have been affected, according to NOLA.com.
The Orleans Parish coroner has yet to release an official cause of death.

If the Lions don't trade out of #3 and take Okudah or Brown I want Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia launched into outer space. I've wanted that for a while now but still.

FU NFL
The NFL will reportedly play “Lift Ev’ry Voice And Sing,” which is also known as the black national anthem, before every Week 1 NFL game in the 2020 season, according to ESPN.
The decision to play the song comes following the death of Minneapolis man George Floyd, which led to nationwide protests over racial inequality and police brutality.
According to the ESPN report, the song will be played before “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Hey NFL you want to market around this guy?
Colin Kaepernick calls Independence Day a 'celebration of white supremacy' and REJECTS it because black people have been 'dehumanized, brutalized, criminalized and terrorized' in the US for centuries

This is an e-mail sent to Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune after an article he published concerning a name change for the Washington Redskins. Dear Mr. Page: I agree with our Native American population. I am highly jilted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward. Let's ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns. The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of militant Blacks from the 60's alive. Gone. It's offensive to us white folk. The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men's lives. I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres. Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates! Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children. The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children. The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to our children. The Milwaukee Brewers. Well that goes without saying. Wrong message to our children. So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the do-nothing Congress loves. As a die-hard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in mind, suggest it might also make some sense to change the name of the Oregon State women's athletic teams to something other than "the Beavers" (especially when they play Southern California. Do we really want the Trojans sticking it to the Beavers??? I always love your articles and I generally agree with them. As for the Redskins name I would suggest they change the name to the "Foreskins" to better represent their community, paying tribute to the dick heads in Washington DC.

And we got the email yesterday about applying your 2020 payments (already made) to the 2021 season. But if you decide to apply it to next season and if in person seating (limited) becomes an option, season ticket holders will get first dibs. But oh you must pay standard ticket prices (yeah I see how you are screwing us Levi's!).
Or if you want a refund. I said to the madre, just apply it to 2021.
Hopefully they would be kind and extend our SBL expiration date by a year due to the pandemic. But knowing money hungry NFL, and Levi's they probably won't.

I haven’t watched a game since the NFL refused a commercial ad by a veterans group asking people to please stand for the National Anthem. The NFL’s reason...asking people to stand is “political”...but allowing their players to kneel during the anthem is okay.
