Because summer is over. Not really weather-like, but anyways, and there's hockey, too.

So we finally sat down and did some careful analysis of what could be the places to move.
Current frontrunners (in this order): Carmel, IN Brentwood/Franklin/Nolensville, TN Mt. Lebanon/Upper St. Claire, PA Morrisville/Cary/Apex, NC
Any opinion on those?

Carmel is the 'Scottsdale' of Indianapolis, but you're still in Indiana. The folklore escapes me. a cousin of mine has lived in Carmel IN for 40 years, it is a nice affluent community Indianapolis people aspire to, just like Scottsdale is the place to be in the Phoenix area. I've been there and its very nice. but are you sure the outter Midwest would be culturally stimulating enough for your family? It's the land of wonder bread and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer.. ( I post like a snobby Californian)

There’s a lot of transplants there because of all the tech industry and colleges.

My childhood friend on my old block I grew up on in SJ moved there a long time ago. Feels like college town but very quaint. If you can handle thunderstorms and they South Heat and Humidity. Then go for it!

I had a rank order in my mind before I started spending a week or longer at my different options, and the site visit made all the difference. I still have a couple places to hit next year, but it sure is good to have first hand knowledge of the different places. I plan to make a follow up trip to the top couple of choices be for making any final decisions.

Yeah, we're going to travel with the kids during the Winter Break through the north route, and then just two of us through the south one in the spring, when we can leave the kids with my parents.

(Austin's problem) Yes, they like it there...but they’re getting a little frustrated with the California and North East transplants and hearing about how NC should do things the way they’re done in those states. Its basically city living...can be hot/humid in the Summer. For the South, its a little liberal...but nothing like California. If you truly want to live in a “conservative” area, you’ll have to get a county or two away from Raleigh...or move to South Carolina

Lebanon/Upper St. Claire, PA Morrisville/Cary/Apex, NC Any opinion on those? JB is in Cary right now, just interviewed with a company out there. I kind of like the area. Much greener than the bay area though it also feels like suburbia and a bit more rural (east coast vs west coast thing I struggle with).. What I like about it - Solid economy and tech hub due to the colleges The various towns all have a decent down town to offer and you can also live in the suburbs while still being within a 20 minute drive to the cities (Cary itself has a very tiny downtown but it looks like it's getting some hip restaurants and has a very very good brewery). Raleigh is a nice sized urban area that's not a nightmare to drive into on the weekend. Durham is gentrifying and Chapel Hill reminds me of downtown Santa Cruz. Weather seems reasonable for the south east. Actually has seasons without getting brutal. Humidty and heat seem to be more tolerable than the deep south and only bad for about 2.5 months. You have a decent sized airport nearby with easy in and out access. You're not in Indiana.

(Austin's problem) It skews more liberal than the State overall but I suspect that's not just due to the transplants but the fact the metro area has 3 top schools as well. The state overall is still pretty conservative from what I've seen.

The fourth quarter vs. Illinois wasn’t pretty and it looked like they succumbed to the pressure rather than respond to the challenge. My fingers are crossed for the OSU game this Saturday.

Indiana kind of represents much of the greater midwest in being a place that is just spectacularly unspectacular. I mean, I can't for the life of me think of any reason I'd ever want to set foot there. Kind of similar to the Dakotas, Arkansa, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, I can go on. I wasn't super familiar with the cities in Tennessee you posted but at least Memphis and Nashville have a more vibrant culture and history to them. Indiana is kind of just code to the rest of America for fly over country.

I’ve never been to North Dakota, so no opinion on that...however, I’d highly recommend eventually setting foot in South Dakota and Idaho. Both have beautiful scenery, wild life, hiking, camping, etc. The badlands and Mt. Rushmore areas in South Dakota and the areas near Yellowstone in Idaho are spectacular to visit.

After reconsideration, the input from this board and an invaluable consultation from cmhshark, Carmel has been removed from the list. Columbus and Pittsburgh remain - we'll be traveling with the kids to see these areas right after the New Year (1/1-1/6).

We’ve spent a lot of time in Coshocton and Holmes counties, about an hour and a half East of Columbus. Beautiful country. I’m not a fan of big cities so I’ve only driven through Columbus on my way out to the country. It gets cold in Ohio...real cold...snow, ice storms, etc...yucky stuff.
