Hey Fug, I know you’ve done a lot of driving; have you ever gone through the Eisenhower tunnel on I70? Anyone else?
I may drive to Cali this Fall and I70 is the only East/West route I haven’t taken yet. If I go, I’ll probably pull my trailer and make it a fun, take my time trip. However, the Eisenhower tunnel is just over 11k feet, so not really sure I want to pull that grade unless its a very gradual incline/decline.

I know I’ve been on that route but don’t have much help for you. I can say I was a passenger on a tour bus during my drum corps days and we were traveling east after coming up 15. I’m not much help beyond our convoy of three busses, two class B trucks and one RV all did it without incident. As with most drum corps tours, it was rehearsal during the day and traveling overnight so I slept through it. TRO

I want all the party stories That particular group was more infamous than famous in the drum corps community (and anyone who followed DCI would now know exactly which corps I am referring to). I played field percussion with 3 different orgs from 1998-2004 and competed at the world championship three times. I think my groups best finish was 6th or 7th in the class we competed in. And oh yes there are stories as you would expect when you take 90-120 16-21 year olds and have them travel all over North America on busses, working together to present what can best be described as an 11 minute halftime show with much more technical movements and music which is judged and scored. All traveling on second or third rate tour buses and sleeping on school gym floors. It was fun to do and I still try to make it to the Seattle show, at least when one of the orgs I competed with is playing up here. Not this year (DCI is canceled for obvious reasons this year) but I would recommend checking out a DCI show. I don’t remember exactly what city they are based in but Carolina Crown is a great group and there are usually 3-4 shows in the Carolinas each year. TRO

The tunnel is about half-way down (or up) a 6% grade that is maybe 20 miles long from the 10,800 ft summit. To the east of that summit the road goes up and down, with some steep grades until you pass over the front range and down into Denver at a fairly steep grade. Going west from the bottom of that grade, you pass Silverthorne and start climbing up a similarly long 6% grade to the Vail summit at about 10,600 and long 6% grade back down. I'd want a good diesel engine and a lot of trailering experience to tow something over those hills.

I spent most of my time in the Blue Devils organization with their division 2 corps. My favorite show probably still is the Blue Devils division 1 show in 2000. it’s all music composed by Bernard Herrmann. The show didn’t win but mostly because there were extremely difficult elements which the execution was slightly off for. Hooray video quality from 2000? TRO

Fortunately the three instruments I’m most competent at are Bassoon, Contrabassoon (if you haven’t seen one of these, it’s a twisted work of art) and marimba. Kit drumming is somewhere around 15th on that list. TRO

Fortunately I only played contrabassoon for 3 years in college and never needed to travel with it. Did travel internationally with my bassoon once (2003). The TSA agents gave most of that band some weird looks wondering why we weren’t checking our instruments. When I said I had (and still have) an amendment to my insurance policy specifically identifying my bassoon by serial number it made a lot more sense to them. TRO

We might be driving one of the cars to Columbus, mrs. cjelli's CX-9. I wonder which route would be easier, just the I-80, or go via I-40 to Oklahoma and climb northeast from there...
