Well, there's always room for entertainment... So I didn't figure out that STOP sign 100% (I thought it was 4-way, turned out it wasn't). I got hit into side by a F-350 towing, my Rogue is now totaled (everyone is healthy, and the F-350 got a crack in the plastic in front). Nationwide acknowledged the total and their estimate seems very decent. Is there any trick I should be on the look out for?
Also, it's obviously time to buy a new car. Safety and reliability are top criteria, but the next ones are comfort, smooth ride and soundproof capability of the cabin. We're talking a small/mid SUV. Should I try Jeep Cherokee/Cadillac XT4 /Lincoln Corsair? Or should I stick with the Japanese and just load them?
Thanks!

My niece's sister bought a XT4 and she loves it. If you don't want to buy new you might want to check out CarMax. I've bought a couple of SUV's from them and they've always been quality cars. That's my 2 cents. Good luck with your search

I am glad to hear you and the family are ok. That's obviously the most important thing. My wife has the Acura MDX and she likes it. The mileage is not great but AWD is quite good in the snow and this is her second one so that tells you how she feels about it. I am about to come off lease (july 15) and am looking at the Mazda CX-5 Toyota Venza Hybrid but right now the front runner is the Subaru Outback Touring. I dont really need one now and as there are shortages this is a sellers market so I will likely wait a bit.

Yikes! Glad to hear everyone is ok! I don't know anything about the Caddy or the Lincoln. My daughter just traded her Cherokee for a Toyota Forerunner. She started having issues with the Cherokee after 18 months and it was brand new. Like Danville mentioned, the MDX is a solid choice. MPG isn't great but it's a very nice ride. The CX-5 is a nice driver but seems too small, to me anyway. I like the Subaru as well. I currently have a Rogue but will be looking for something bigger when the market gets better. Now that I have two dogs, the Rogue just doesn't provide enough space. My research hasn't begun in earnest and won't help you much because your need is immediate. I'll likely be focusing on Japanese makes as the ones to beat. Toyota and Honda, I've owned both, do seem to hold value a bit better than the competition.

Here's my 2-cents, The wife has a 2018 Subaru Forester "Black edition" and she loves it. Gets pretty decent MPG's between 25-28. When we have gone up into snow country it has always handled great. Glad to hear everyone is OK.

Wow, well glad you and family are all ok, Cjelli. wife owns the Toyota RAV4, gets high marks for safety & reliability. Good dimension for family of 4, but not at all a ‘bulky’ SUV. Can fit 2 adult bikes in the back hatch.. well thought out.

So, have you figured out which one to get yet? We used to have a Volvo XC90 when they first came out. sold it when the kids moved out and it was just to big of a suv for us, but my wife absolutely loved it.

So first, we had that vacation, and then I caught a cold, and now my parents are leaving, so we hadn't any time to look yet. Starting next week we'll go around, and the current - theoretical - leaders are the Infiniti QX50, the Cadillac XT4, the Lincoln Corsair and the Volvo XC40. But I am going to test-drive some 8-9 models.

We have a Honda Pilot (made in the USA) and really like it. AWD works great, good milage, holds a lot of people and stuff.

I know nobody in here probably cares but a guy I know is trying to build a new hockey fight database. I've donated already and will donate again. Any amount would help. If you know any hockey fight diehards like me, please share the link. Thanks. gofund.me/b39449b8

So the shortlist of the cars are the loaded Mazda CX-5, the Acura RDX and the Lincoln Corsair. I would like to take the Corsair, but I am worried it'll begin to fall apart in four-five years, when the warranty expires, and its resale value will tank.
A propos there were no Jeep Cherokees and no Cadillacs XT4 to drive. Nada.

I've checked everything numerous times making sure that it won't have a major problem in the near future. I'm waiting for the wheels to fall off of it at a stop light early next month.

Zero incentive for dealer to work with you on price. Best sellers market I have ever seen.

I liked the CX-5 better and the wife liked the Forester. Both had what we wanted and the color we wanted it all boiled down to price, at the time both were offering zero percent interest, Subaru offered us a deal we couldn't refuse.

At the end of the car hunt, we ran the numbers, and decided, fuck it.
We bought a certified pre-owned Rogue 2018, simplest trim. The totaled car was a 2015 Rogue. So now I have the same car with 25K miles less, 3 yr younger, 55K more powertrain warranty. They added a few safety features since then and improved the rear camera.
That Rogue was the only car among the small new and certified pre-owned Japanese SUVs under $20K (except its twin at the same dealership that smelled of tobacco). No Rav4, CRV, CX-5 or Foresters in that range. That adds up to mundane Jeeps and XT4s.
Bidenomics, fuck him.
