Now the San Jose Sharks’ season is over, Radim Simek will actually play some hockey games.
Simek, along with Tomas Hertl, just joined Team Czechia for the World Championships, set to start next week.
It hasn’t been all smiles recently for Simek though, coming off a challenging year with the San Jose Sharks. After Mar. 5, the 29-year-old defenseman played just two of San Jose’s 27 remaining games. In one of those two appearances, Simek actually played forward for the first time since he was 12.
Radim Simek, who was healthy for a good portion of the last two months of the season, expressed some discontent to Hokej.cz earlier today.
“I was told younger guys must play [in my place]. Coaches told me the decision comes from management. The management told me it’s just the coaching staff’s call. Someone outright lied to me, they didn’t tell me the truth,” Simek said. “With the national team, I want to prove to myself that I can still play ice hockey.”
Before the All-Star break, when the San Jose Sharks were still in playoff hunt, Simek appeared in 28 of 46 games. But after the break, Simek found himself low on the depth chart behind young and/or inexperienced blueliners like Ryan Merkley, Nicolas Meloche, Jaycob Megna, and Jake Middleton.
“It’s not nice,” Simek added. “One always wonders who’s telling the truth and who’s not. I’ve been brought up to always tell the truth and be honest. I’m not saying they are not honest, but in this case, they didn’t want to tell me the truth. It stings a little bit, but what can you do?”
Radim Simek is signed for two more years with a $2.25 million AAV. It could prove to be a little bit of an awkward reunion if he returns to the San Jose Sharks for the 2022-23 season.

Is Patrick Marleau going to officially announce his retirement this Tuesday?
The San Jose Sharks announced today that Marleau would hold a press conference at SAP Center this Tuesday at 11 AM to “make an announcement regarding the future of his hockey career.” Sharks president Jonathan Becher and interim general manager Joe Will will be among those in attendance.
The 42-year-old hasn’t played since the 2020-21 campaign. He finished that season with the San Jose Sharks with four goals and five assists in 56 games.
If this is indeed Patrick Marleau’s farewell, he will retire as the NHL’s leader in All-Time Games Played at 1,779. He broke Gordie Howe’s hallowed record last season on Apr. 19 in Las Vegas. He will also depart at 910 Consecutive Games Played, the fifth-longest mark in NHL history.

This is wild... Granted not nearly as bad as Gallant's firing but the man misses one playoffs in a challenging season and gets the boot. But Lou does go on to say that a new voice is needed. That just happens in hockey. So I'm not sure if Bob's coaching can be accurately assessed because the roster under him has been shit. But if there was a time to pick up a proven new coach... Hopefully Joe will has called Barry already because I'm sure he will have numerous suiters beating down his door.

Also, I'm glad Barabanov signed again, granted 2.5 is a little steep. He's put up good numbers with linemates he doesn't fully mesh with and it's unfortunate that the one linemate he had chemistry with turned out to be a huge POS off the ice lol.

The Ottawa Senators have shown Pierre McGuire the door after only 10 months on the job.
Hired as the senior vice president of hockey development by late owner Eugene Melnyk, the 60-year-old McGuire was fired by the Senators Monday.
McGuire was informed of the decision Monday morning
Brought in July 12, 2021 after lengthy broadcasting career with NBC Sports, McGuire had been doing a lot of scouting for the organization in the last few months and had spent a great deal of time with the club’s AHL affiliate in Belleville.

Why did they hire him in the first place? What did they expect him to do there? From what I gather... Melnyk was pretty much out of his mind but had a strangle hold on everything in the front office. Literally the day after his death, all unpaid debts (left intentionally unpaid by him because he has perceived slights from the other companies) were paid off by the front office. It was his way or the highway and the guy was pretty much crazy.

He only had one more year remaining. The theory is he is too defensive minded in a league moving to offense. Only missed the postseason this year with not a great lineup. I guess he wore out his welcome there.

Sharks should hire Trotz and let him pick the GM. Absolutely…is he defense minded…yes, thats his team talent also. He also coached the Caps…who had a pretty good offense then. I think he’s the best coach in the NHL.

But maybe just the new voice would get the sharks to hold onto a God damn lead for once lol.

Barabanov signing 'yes', Megna a 'no' in my book. If you're keeping a 29 year old D-man, why not Simek who is signed for 2 more seasons at $2.2m? Seems like the Org screwed Simek over late in the season. When Semik is healthy I personally think he is better D than Megna. A bit more physical.
Now, plenty of Shark summer RFA's to deal with before June 29th (Draft). Just my opinion...
Re-sign these RFA's: - Ferrarro - Gregor - Chmelevski - Kahkonen
Let these RFA's walk: - Gadjovich - Blichfeld - Dahlen - Leonard - Halbgewachs - Gallant - Sawchenko

Probably where my money goes. I think he'll have no shortage of suitors and much better opportunities than SJ. Detroit would make a lot of sense.

For Kahkonen I would resign for sure, and not necessarily to keep him but one of the three goalies Reimer/Hill/Kahkonen would have to be moved and probably get something decent in return.

I guess they should keep Kahkonen but I wasn’t impressed with him at all. I’d keep Gadjovich and Ferraro is one of few bright spots they have for the future but he needs to develop his puck skills more and contribute offensively or his ceiling will be pretty limited. Don’t care about anyone else on the list and would prefer new faces to old at this point.

Yeah Ferraro seemed to have lost his touch with the puck or maybe just didn't try to go offensive before his injury. Hopefully after the summer, he will be 100% again and can continue his improvement.

I'd really like to see sharks upgrade that 'enforcer' role. Small young forwards (Bordeleau, Eklund,..) coming up and it will be important IMO to have a bigger 'bomb' on the bench. seems the enforcer role in the NHL is back in vogue & very valuable again. seems really hard to find those fighters who also won't hurt a team skating NHL 4th line. Ferraro is an excellent NHL skater; probably sharks most important RFA to get locked in again, IMO.. Kahkonen? He looked strong at times, had his moments. He also makes me wonder why Minnesota (Bill Guerin) gave up on him. 37 year old Fleury isn't exactly their goalie of the future.

Also, the Kane contract termination grevance hearing should be coming up before the June 29 draft. REALLY important Sharks get a favorable ruling on that to take Kane's $23Mil (3 years) off the team Cap. Only have $5mil in Cap space left (counting Barabanov signing). Not much teal can get upgraded if Kane & NHLPA win that grevance hearing.
