EDMONTON, Alberta -- A man has been charged with forging the signature of Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid on team jerseys and then selling them for big profits.
Edmonton police say the 23-year-old man in April 2018 contacted several people on Facebook, claiming he was employed by either the Edmonton Oilers Entertainment Group or Pro Am Sports and was selling autographed McDavid jerseys.
Chandra Vinesh Singh has been charged with fraud, forging documents and false pretense.
Investigators believe he sold two items bearing bogus signatures to someone for $1,400, then defrauded another person of $23,000.
Oilers Entertainment Group executive Tim Shipton thanked fans for their support but stressed that this case is a "good reminder for our fans to always go to trusted sources."

Jones was bad most of year but when the backs were against the wall, he stepped up in a big way and outplayed Fleury big time.
Still not an elite goalie but good enough to get them where they need to? Possibly. Either way, hard to move on from that contract now. Show him some confidence and hope he plays like playoff Jones next year.

Hmm, while I usually agree with you and defer to your hockey expertise...Jones had a .898 save % and a 3.02 GAA average last playoffs, which put him near the bottom of playoff goalie stats. I agree that he had a couple of good games...but overall, IMO he was a minus in the playoffs.

Maybe I’m remembering Jones too fondly but playoffs is such a small sample that 3-5 bad games can skew the numbers right? The way the team is built they need Jones to be good, not great. However I think the up temp style they play is better suited for a different kind of goalie than Jones is.

I agree with that...I said many times last year that if Jones could get his save percentage to .910 (which is good, but not great) the Sharks would be almost unbeatable.

It was .909 and 2.72 before.
In his first three PO seasons with the Sharks he posted .926 SVP and 2.07 GAA.

What is more likely? Both Sharks goal tenders happen to have the worst years of their careers for completely unrelated reasons or the Sharks team Defense in front of them took a shit because they tried to play the Vegas style up tempo all five players forward offense and it resulted in a terrible team D and numerous break away chances against the goalies thereby screwing with their heads? I dont think this is discussed enough. I think Jones was soft sometimes but I also think the D was very sloppy very often. Nobody like what Doughty said about Burns but it is true and the sloppy D was not his alone. I am hopeful that bringing Boughner back to run the D will solve this issue.

Yeah. Odd considering this happens in a heated division/regional rivalry.

The .909/2.72 was good enough for the first two rounds but I’m not sure it would have been enough to go further if Jones had been able to maintain that. If he could have put up his historical playoff numbers they potentially get the cup. I also agree with those saying this isn’t all Jones fault and that he plays behind a very loose defense. Burns gives up many turn overs and odd man rushes due to his offensive mindset...and the players who have been able to cover that the past few years are gone, or have lost a step, such as pickles.

"I would love to be with St. Louis. I would love to play here again. Me and (general manager) Doug (Armstrong) talk. We've had conversations, and I think it's tough right now. [There are] a lot of restricted free agents right now, and everyone's trying to find their number. The cap really didn't go up. I'm just enjoying it. I'm just going to take the time and really soak it all in. I know I've got a lot left in the tank, a couple years. I've got three solid years I can give someone."
"I'm ready to compete and play for any team that wants me. I'm a guy you can probably use in the locker room, a good veteran guy. I don't really pump my tires up too much, but I feel like I've done a good job of bringing guys together and being a locker room guy. I think anyone can use me right now."

from Mark Spector of Sportnst,
Milan Lucic for James Neal. Two 31-year-old unhappy players who failed to live up to their multi-year UFA deals, swapped in a one-for-one — almost. Because Lucic’s contract presents a more difficult buy-out, the Oilers have tossed in a conditional third-round pick in 2020.
Also, the Oilers will retain $750,000 of Lucic’s salary, marking the end of a long, unsuccessful chapter of Lucic’s career, having scored just 16 goals in his past 161 games....
Neal is a scorer — pure and simple. He doesn’t do much else for you when he’s not scoring. And, for a guy who has scored 20 goals or more in 10 of his 11 NHL seasons, he’s been traded three times now and was left open in the Vegas expansion draft.
That points to character issues, plain and simple.
In Edmonton, however, where Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins are starving for a right-winger who can score, can Neal become a 20-goal man once again? If he can, Edmonton wins the trade, as it is unlikely Lucic will see the offensive opportunity in Calgary that awaits Neal in Edmonton.
Because anyone who has watched Lucic stumble through the past two seasons wouldn’t bet you a nickel that he will ever be a top-six producer ever again. All that remains in Lucic’s skillset is size and intimidation, both of which have diminishing value in today’s game.

8 Million a year for that stiff?
from Brett Cyrgalis of the New York Post,
Now the Rangers are officially in a bind.
As expected, the club signed restricted-free-agent defenseman Jacob Trouba on Friday to a seven-year, $56 million deal that carries an annual salary cap hit of $8 million. That temporarily puts the Blueshirts into the summer allowance over the cap ceiling of $81.5 million, with just over a month to figure out how to cut some salary.
That could very well include trading Chris Kreider and the one year remaining on his deal at $4.625 million, and continuing to look for anyone willing to bite on the one year and $4 million left for Vladislav Namestnikov. Certainly this also makes things more difficult for the three remaining restricted free agents — Pavel Buchnevich (with an arbitration hearing set for July 29), Brendan Lemieux, and Tony DeAngelo.
It also makes the buying out of defensemen Kevin Shattenkirk (two more years at $6.65 million per) and Brendan Smith (two more years at $4.35 million per) a lot more real. If Smith clears waivers and heads to AHL Hartford, then the Rangers would save $1.25 million against the cap.

from Meghan Potkins of the Calgary Herald,
A tentative deal has been reached between the city and the Calgary Flames for a new arena to replace the Saddledome.
City council members will discuss the proposed agreement at 3:45 p.m. Monday behind closed doors, Postmedia has learned.
Negotiations between the two camps were recently described as “productive” by the chair of council’s event centre committee. Council could potentially host a public debate on the proposed agreement before elected officials break for the summer in August, Mayor Naheed Nenshi said Friday.
“I look forward to continuing conversations,” Nenshi said. “I know a lot of folks have been working very hard to see if there is something there that meets the criteria that we’ve talked about — the most important criteria, of course, being public money must have public benefit. And I really look forward to seeing where people are at.
“I’m hopeful there will be some stuff to talk about with the public on Monday.”

Former American Gaming Association (AGA) executive Sara Slane will work as a consultant for the National Hockey League (NHL), advising its teams on sports betting strategies.
Slane has been brought in to help the league grow its presence within gaming, with the expansion of legalised sports betting across the US well underway.
Slane has confimed she has offered her support to the NHL when it comes to forming new partnerships, gaming legislation and the gaming and sports betting marketplace.
Nine NHL teams are located in states where sports betting has been legalised, with North Carolina the next state likely to join the list.
NHL CBO Keith Wachtel said: “Our new partnership with Slane Advisory is another example of our commitment to working collaboratively with the sports betting industry and developing a best-in-class approach to partnerships.
"We need someone who understands the business and can help us and help out teams in creating partnerships and evaluating the space.

I sense DW is done seeking outside help. From summer quotes, Wilson seems calculated on a few home grown forwards to splash in for 40 NHL goals this season. to the hockey optimistic, that is possible. The bigger pieces are really how Jones' head is getting re-screwed on this summer.. and how the EK65 groin is healing up. that surgery needs to hold up for 11 seasons. Disappointed Johan Hedberg is still goalie coach after last seasons complete crease debacle. Since Jones has the fat contract, Hedberg or Dell should have rolled OUT but no consequence was paid. Maybe Hedberg's job becomes guaranteed for 11 more seasons now since he's a Swede.
