from TSN,
Negotiations between the Maple Leafs and restricted free agent Mitch Marner are being watched closely by agents around the NHL this summer, as Joe Smith of The Athletic writes that they are waiting for him to sign with Toronto.
"It appears there’s a waiting game among high-profile RFAs with no one wanting to go first, with a source saying agents are waiting for Toronto’s Mitch Marner to get his deal done and set the market," Smith wrote.
Marner is one of several high-profile restricted free agents who remain without a contract this summer, including Brayden Point of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Colorado Avalanche winger Mikko Rantanen, Matthew Tkachuk of the Calgary Flames, Winnipeg Jets forwards Patrik Laine and Kyle Connor and Brock Boeser of the Vancouver Canucks.

from Michael Russo of The Athletic,
After 25 years of paying dues in order to rise to a general manager post in the NHL, Paul Fenton’s rocky tenure with the Wild came to an abrupt end after only one non-playoff season, multiple sources told The Athletic.
In a late-summer decision that will send shockwaves throughout the State of Hockey and the entire league, sources said owner Craig Leipold called Fenton at his offseason home in Cape Cod late Tuesday morning and cut ties with him a little more than 14 months after naming the longtime Nashville Predators assistant GM the Wild’s third GM in team history.

Having lived in the South Bay for many years I can honestly say that there are a lot of really shitty drivers in the area. One of my favorites is when other drivers treat my turn signal as a reason to speed up and take away the lane I'm trying to switch into. There are many fine drivers of course. But the asshole driver to good driver ratio in the South Bay is heavily weighted toward the assholes.

from Brett Cyrgalis of the New York Post,
In this salary-cap squeeze, Kevin Shattenkirk was the casualty.
The Rangers plan to buy out the remaining two years of the 30-year-old’s contract at $6.65 million per season, The Post has learned. In what was a confusing couple days when the exact buyout window wasn’t clear to most around the league, the Blueshirts’ intentions were.
This will now leave the Rangers with four years of dead cap space, but will give them quite a bit of relief this coming season. Having been into the summer allowance over the $81.5 million salary-cap ceiling, the Rangers will now carry a hit for Shattenkirk of $1.483 million this season, making them immediately compliant. It will be followed by the big hit of $6.083 million in 2020-21, and then the next two seasons he would count for $1.433 million, all according to CapFriendly.com.

from Sean Leahy of NBC Sports,
The NHL free agent market opened one month ago today and there was plenty of cash thrown around and faces headed for new places. While there were 126 signings of different varieties on July 1 there have been 167 total in the 30 days since.
Even with all those contracts signed, there are still plenty of potentially helpful unrestricted free agents available on the market. We know how strong the restricted crop that’s left is, but that’s a different story altogether.
Let’s take a look at some of the UFAs still unsigned.
HOME OR RETIREMENT Niklas Kronwall, 38 Patrick Marleau, 39 Joe Thornton, 39 Justin Williams, 37
Don’t expect any of these four to join new teams. In the case of Marleau, he’d be going home after a few years in Toronto and very quick stop as a member of the Hurricanes. Either these players will return to the teams they’re most identified with on one-year deals or they will hang up their skates.
HEADED FOR A PTO? Scott Darling, 30 Ben Lovejoy, 35 Marc Methot, 34 Dion Phaneuf, 34 Cam Ward, 35
