from William Douglas of NHL.com,
Marlowe Stoudamire never scored a goal, blocked a shot or logged a minute of ice time in an NHL game. But that didn't stop him from becoming a change agent in the sport.
Stoudamire, a Detroit native, was a driving force in the Detroit Red Wings, NHL and NHL Players' Association launch in February of "Learn, Play, Score," an ambitious $1 million pilot program to bring hockey to more than 30,000 children in the city.
"He never played hockey, but he was always passionate about hockey as a way of bringing communities together," said Kim Davis, NHL Vice President, Social Impact, Growth Initiatives & Legislative Affairs. "He wanted to be the voice of those communities to say that indeed, Detroit is Hockeytown, and there's a rich history of black and brown people playing hockey in the city of Detroit."
Stoudamire's friendly, booming voice was silenced Tuesday, when he died at the age of 43 after contracting the coronavirus. He is survived by his wife, Valencia, and two young children.

SAN JOSE — Early last month as the first scary moments of the coronavirus threat was becoming a reality, Jonathan Becher, president of Sharks Sports & Entertainment, huddled with NHL officials to determine whether it made sense to keep playing.
In the end, Becher said the Sharks and league made the best decision they could with the information they had at the time. The Sharks hosted three games at SAP Center after Santa Clara County health officials had recommended on March 5 against large gatherings to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus outbreak that has become a global pandemic.
The Sharks played at home March 5 against the Minnesota Wild, March 7 against the Ottawa Senators and March 8 against the Colorado Avalanche.
“Early March felt a lot different than (where) we are today,” Becher said in a conference call with reporters Tuesday. “We were all making the best decision we could.”
Becher’s description of how the decision to play those games was made highlights the chaotic days that American professional sports officials experienced before shutting down their respective seasons in the wake of the worst public health crisis in 100 years.
The county’s March 5 recommendation also had called on people who were sick or at high risk to not attend any event that was happening. And it suggested organizers needed to take extra precautions when cleaning their sites.
While Sharks officials followed the secondary recommendations, Becher said the decision to play NHL games at SAP Center came after he called executives from other Bay Area sports teams and NHL officials consulted with their health experts.
“Most professional sports franchises, including us in the NHL, don’t have the ability to call off games by themselves,” Becher said. “That typically comes from the league that they participate in.”
The Sharks played the three games in front of thousands of fans although the Santa Clara County Public Health Department had recommended all public gatherings of more than 1,000 people be canceled or postponed.
Becher said the county recommendations had left many questions.
“The first question was, is this a mandate?” he said. “Can you play? And we said, ‘Yes, we can, and if we play, we have to make these following recommendations’ ”
Becher said the league told Sharks officials it wanted to consult its health authorities before a decision was made.
“(We) go back and forth and ultimately, we made the decision to play,” Becher said.
NHL spokesman Gary Meagher said in an email to this news organization that league officials were in regular communication with the Sharks from March 5 to March 8.
“Ultimately, the decision to play or not to play any NHL game is a decision that is made by the League office,” the email said.
Other area sporting events also were held during the timeline. The Golden State Warriors played games at Chase Center in San Francisco on March 5, 7 and 10 whereas the San Jose Earthquakes played an MLS home game on March 7. The NBA suspended its season March 11 and the NHL and MLS stopped play on March 12.
The decision to hold sports events in early March after cases of coronavirus were confirmed in the Bay Area has been criticized by a retired UC Berkeley professor of infectious disease. Dr. John Swartzberg, a clinical professor emeritus at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health, said in an email last month to this news organization that it was a mistake to hold those sports events.
“I thought it was irresponsible for the Sharks to have fans at those games,” Swartzberg wrote.
Swartzberg had previously criticized Bay Area teams for playing games: “There’s no better way to infect more people rapidly than to take human beings and put them in a confined space for a prolonged period of time. And that’s exactly what gatherings do,” he told the Guardian in a story published March 13.
Swartzberg had a reason for concern. By March 5, Santa Clara County had 20 confirmed cases of COVID-19. As of Wednesday, the county has reported 956 confirmed cases and 32 deaths.
The Sharks have not played since March 11 when they were in Chicago. SAP Center has not held an event since the March 8 game against the Avalanche. Santa Clara County banned mass gatherings on March 9.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the incubation period of COVID-19 and other coronaviruses ranges from two days to 14 days.
Becher said to his knowledge, no one in the Sharks organization has tested positive for coronavirus.
The Sharks announced March 12 that a part-time employee at SAP Center had tested positive. That person, as of last weekend, was feeling better, according to a team spokesman.
“If someone on our hockey staff, if someone on our team was going to test positive, they would have done so by now,” Becher said. “The fact that no player, no hockey staff, no full-time employee in the building has ever seemingly been affected or tested positive is very reassuring that we at SAP Center have been safe.”
Last month, the Senators and Avalanche each announced that two of their players have tested positive for coronavirus. Gord Wilson, the Senators’ radio color analyst, has also tested positive.
The Senators and Avalanche also played the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center.
Wednesday, the Senators announced four additional members of organization who traveled to California tested positive for COVID-19. Members of the team and staff self-isolated on March 13, and the team said in a statement that all are “doing well. All test results have now been received, and all those who tested positive have recovered.”
“My first reaction is more human,” Becher said. “I never want that on anybody, let alone a professional hockey player. And then, of course, your mind does wander: could it be related to having played those games? You’ll never really know. It’s impossible to trace things. People went into grocery stores. They’re in Ubers, et cetera, they interact with people.
“One speculates, but we’ve been told by lots of people, no point in speculating. It seems highly unlikely if it was related to playing at SAP Center, that was now more than 20 days ago.”

NEW YORK (April 3, 2020) – The National Hockey League today released the following statement:
“The National Hockey League is appalled that a video call arranged today by the New York Rangers to introduce their fans to one of the League’s incoming stars, K’Andre Miller, was hacked with racist, cowardly taunts. The person who committed this despicable act is in no way an NHL fan and is not welcome in the hockey community.
“No one deserves to be subjected to such ugly treatment and it will not be tolerated in our League. We join with the Rangers in condemning this disgusting behavior.”
NEW YORK, April 3, 2020 – “We held an online video chat with fans and New York Rangers prospect, K'Andre Miller, during which a vile individual hijacked the chat to post racial slurs, which we disabled as soon as possible. We were incredibly appalled by this behavior, which has no place online, on the ice, or anywhere, and we are investigating the matter.”

via TSN's YouTube page,
Following a conference call between 12 major league sports commissioners and the President of the United States Donald Trump, TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun joins SportsCentre to share the takeaways from the call and discuss whether or not Trump's desire to have sports resume 'sooner rather than later' will expedite the process.
LeBrun's personal option is no NHL hockey until next season.

Quick thought - thinking baseball will play a special 100 game season starting in June, NFL no problem.. but looking more like NBA & NHL will be asked to scrap their seasons and start again in the fall. Getting NHL playoffs in seems a logistical impossibility over the summer months.
So what happens with all those trade teams loading up for a Post-season that will never happen? Sharks get a 1st rounder for Goodrow, so he can.. show up at Tampa Bay training camp in the fall? Marleau plays 44 more games and breaks the all-time game record as a Penguin? There’s still a ton to be worked out.
