Former player, coach and now hockey analyst Mike Milbury has a knack for ruffling feathers and putting his foot in his mouth. It has happened too many times to count over his 13 years or so as a broadcaster. But, after his stance on playoffs overtime last night during the epic game between Tampa Bay and Columbus that saw the teams play the equivalent of more than two straight games, at least one former NHLer believes enough is enough.
Game one of the series between the Lightning and the Blue Jackets was not decided until a little over midway through the fifth overtime period, when the Bolts Brayden Point fired home the winner for a 3-2 win. While this was happening, Milbury stated on NBCSN, as well as tweeting, that playoff overtime should eventually go to three-on-three and then a shootout if needed. There was reaction from many fans calling the take stupid. Sean Avery, who spent 13 seasons in the NHL and, let's face it, enjoys running his mouth as much as Milbury, posted a series of Instagram stories stating his disbelief with Milbury's comments (full video included below).
"Sudden death overtime, that's the f---ing playoffs," said Avery. "Bozo. Mike."
"This thing's about to go into four OTs," he continued. "These goalies are playing unbelievable. And I can't get off Mike Milbury suggesting that we should get rid of sudden death. NBC, he should have to quit, or fire him today," said Avery while holding his young child. "This is what hockey's all about! This is do or die, baby!"
"These guys are playing lights out! Seth Jones has played almost an hour," Avery went on. Jones, by the way, would finish the game with 63:52 of ice time, a new playoff record.
"Mike Milbury, NHL on NBC. NBC's the peacock network. They have a f---ing peacock as a commentator," said Avery, continuing his rant on Milbury.
Love or hate Avery, and most fans fall in one of those categories rather than somewhere in between, he makes a good point about Milbury. Whether or not you're a fan of either team, Tuesday night's game between Columbus and Tampa Bay was fantastic and likely drew in more viewers as the overtime went on. As for Milbury, he continued making asinine statements following the game, when he took to Twitter reiterating his call for playoff three-on-three and a shootout, while posting a picture of the CN Tower in Toronto and calling it the Space Needle, which is in Seattle.

Lee was holding on for dear life, and pulling Wilson as close as possible to avoid the heaviest punches, during that scrap with Wilson. I picked the Isles to win this series, but I sure hope Washington wins...they’re fun to watch.

I picked the Isles to win this series, but I sure hope Washington wins...they’re fun to watch. There’s a lot of bite in that series; Johnston’s a heavyweight, the Martin-Cizikas-Clutterbuck line hit everything, Mayfield and Boychuk are big and physical, and then the Caps have Willy obviously, Gudas, Hathaway, and Dillon, and of course Ovi hits about as hard as anyone.

NEW YORK (Aug. 12, 2020) – Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour has been fined $25,000 for comments following Game 1 of the team’s First Round series against the Boston Bruins, the National Hockey League announced today. Additionally, Brind’Amour has been assessed a conditional fine of $25,000, which will be collected, in addition to any subsequent discipline, in the event of similar inappropriate behavior through Aug. 12, 2021.
The fine money goes to the NHL Foundation.
from Luke DeCock of the News & Observer,
Brind’Amour challenged one aspect of the play; the NHL ruled that the officials had actually gotten a different aspect wrong and not only awarded the goal but gave the Bruins a power play.
“This is why the league’s a joke, in my opinion, on these things,” Brind’Amour told The News & Observer. “That one is a crime scene.”
n the second period, Boston’s Charlie Coyle ended up scoring into an open net after Anders Bjork swiped the puck from Petr Mrazek’s glove on the ice. The Hurricanes challenged the goal, arguing that there was an illegal hand pass when the Bruins’ Nick Ritchie knocked the puck out of midair with his glove before it ended up with Mrazek.
Referee Chris Lee ruled that Mrazek had possession of the puck, wiping out the hand pass -- an admission the officials botched the play by failing to blow the whistle when Mrazek froze the puck -- and awarding the goal. But Brind’Amour said afterward that referees Lee and Francis Charron wouldn’t give him any information about the call on the ice, leaving him with a 50-50 choice of which of their potential mistakes to challenge.
“They came to me, and I said, ‘If he has possession of it then it’s goalie interference. If he doesn’t have possession then it’s a hand pass. It’s one of the two. I don’t know what you’re calling on the ice,’” Brind’Amour said. “All he has to do is tell me. ‘We’re calling it nonpossession (by Mrazek),’ then we’re challenging a glove-hand pass. If it’s possession, then goaltender interference. I said, ‘Tell me the call on the ice.’ They wouldn’t do it when I say, ‘What is the call?’ So I had to flip a coin. ...

Milbury calling the CN Tower the Space Needle is extra mint. But regardless Milbury sucks.

Danville was right Gus Nyquist does suck! He's just as useless as he was as a Shark! Barclay looks good though! Barclay gives you and honest shift and can play physical. Good in the circle and that is an undervalued talent. He is a role player nothing more but you need guys like him. Gus can be knocked off the puck with ease.

Definitely was sad to see Barclay leave, but the pick we got for him was desperately needed since we lost out on what turned to be the 3rd overall. But the middle of the lineup is going to need a replacement for him. And Gus was almost as irrelevant as Martin Havlat. And I think he played more games than him lol
