I think you have two issues. #1 Post injury he is nowhere near the player he was. #2 The sharks are too defensively flawed to cover for him I actually think he make the team worse. They would be better off with a guy that scores no points but is defensively sound. I am not talking about a shutdown D man but just a responsible one. I think there is a #0 reason that is most significant of all. He was never the player he was reputed to be. I think the player we see is what he has always been. Slow, stupid, not just lacking the right skill defensively but appallingly poor in judgement, and far from “carrying” the Senators, they became a losing team precisely because they gave him so much time with the puck. It led to him racking up points on his own balance sheet but this actually hurt the team overall. Sharks (and fans like me) were foolish to desire and acquire him, but it is totally on Wilson to be so stupid that he actually signed him for 8 yeas after seeing what the pig looked like out of its poke that first season. I 100% disagree with this take. Watch the Senators beat the Bruins, Rangers, and then lose to the Penguins in 2017. On one leg (literally showing up to the games on crutches) he was the best player on the ice night in and out. He was one of the best players in the world at that time (I distinctly remember a conversation about him ranking behind Crosby/McDavid as the top three players in the world, and this was after his Norris seasons. He wasn’t slow, he was one of the best skaters in the world. He wasn’t stupid, he was seeing the ice and making plays nobody was thinking about. His production didn’t hurt the team, he was nearly carrying it on his back. What I think is true is that he did irreparable damage to himself playing injured in that postseason. His game dropped off the next year and he has never shown that same form since that playoff run. His skating isn’t what it used to be. He was never blazing fast but he was too elusive for guys to check or cover. He doesn’t have that now. He can still see the game well but the up in pace has diminished his talent in that area. At this point he’s nothing more than a mid pair PP specialist but unfortunately he is being paid as one of the best players in the world. I think Ottawa might’ve known he was damaged goods and that is why they were hesitant to pay him (aside from Melnyk being a cheap prick) and why Karlsson wanted out.

The Winnipeg Jets have re-signed forward Andrew Copp to a one-year, $3.64 million contract. This avoids arbitration but walks Copp right to unrestricted free agency.

Well right back atcha, I disagree with at least 75% of this. People don’t lose hockey sense and ice vision. Wayne Gretzky was a shadow of his former self overall toward the end but he still made jaw dropping plays no one else would consider or complete on a regular basis. Pelvic floor injuries will certainly impair skating to a degree that can never be recovered but that doesn’t seem to be the main thing that limits his skating effectiveness. He seems as inept at anticipating the play and moving in the right direction defensively as Burns is. That isn’t impaired skating, that is being lost on the ice and that really ought still to be there if it ever had been. Karlsson occasionally occasionally completes a pretty pass but he serves up an awful lot of turnovers too and his net negatives he has racked up are well earned I would say. You are possibly the only one here who saw Karlsson more than rarely before he came to SJ so I must defer with respect to some of your opinion but having seen him so rarely I have to wonder how much of his reputation in Ottawa was fallaciously inflated stat lines and hype for the occasional amazing play, and how much was real. Because he sure doesn’t look like someone who had it and lost it. The main point remaining, it was very obvious what his current ability is at the end of his first season and it was stupid to re-sign him, never mind for a team crippling contract.

I spent quite a bit of time watching as much postseason hockey as I could this year. For the most part turnovers were the number one factor. Some are forced by good smart play, it happens to everyone. The sharks on the other hand give up too many of these when they are not forced into it. This combined with sub par goalie play absolutely kills them. As far as EK65, I remember his first season here and he openly was calling out Dillon over something. It was a bad look as Dillon is a pretty solid defender and gritty. I would take him over EK65 hands down. I still think he is injury impaired and I dont expect him to ever be a good fit here.

For sure his highlight reel and insane production masked his defensive deficiencies, but he was putting up insane numbers and highlight reel plays for a reason. He was immensely skilled and what he was doing offensively by far outweighed his defensive miscues. He was a net positive player and that is without taking into account that he was doing stuff very few players have the ability to do. A lot of defenseman can make the safe play and be sound players, not many can make an impact on the game the way Karlsson did. Also the injury I was referring to in 2017 was multiple fractures in his heel (I think it was the same foot were he had his Achilles severed). Watching him glide around effortlessly from before that point to his skating now is a night and day. He was a great defenseman but you are correct that the bets Wilson took with him failed and now his contract (most of all but not alone) is the downfall of this team.

The mouse is buying and controling everyone and everything when it comes to entertainment and streaming.
from Alex Weprin of The Hollywood Reporter,
The Walt Disney Co. will pay the National Hockey League $350 million to buy the league’s 10 percent stake in Disney Streaming Services, the Disney subsidiary that manages the technology platforms that power the company’s streaming services, like Disney+ and ESPN+. Disney Streaming Services was previously known as BAMTech.
The NHL had an option to trigger the buyout this year, and according to Disney’s quarterly report, the league exercised its option on Aug. 3. The deal is expected to close by the end of fiscal 2021. When the deal is complete, Disney will own 85 percent of BAMTech/Disney Streaming Services, with Major League Baseball holding the remaining 15 percent.

via Larry Brooks tweets,
PA has alerted players that NHL will not pay for COVID insurance at Olympics or Olympics qualifiers. League position is that players will not be paid for games they miss because of COVID if contracted at Olympic events.
PA has presented IIHF with cost to of insurance but has been told international federations will not pay. So at this point, PA “strongly advises” players not to participate in Olympic qualifying events. Talks are ongoing.

What do y'all think is the over/under (pun intended) Kane actually plays this season?
Best case: (if it is even possible) Sharks/Kane both terminate his contract, hopefully his cap hit is then erased, sharks can shop replacement.
Worst case: He has to attend rehab for his addiction, misses X-amount of time, his cap hit stays and "arguably" the best forward is gone as well.
This is all pending of course the outcome of the investigation if he did/did not bet on NHL games.

This situation won't last until training camp starts I hope you are right and its solved by then! That way maneuvering can be done before the start of camp. I just fear, or just a Debby downer, or the hockey gods hate the sharks, that the sharks will be stuck with his cap hit for a while. Sounds like Kane just needs to bolt for the KHL, that life would be a better fit for him and make more money haha.

He should be be gone for other reasons but this is too much, especially with reports coming out that he ignored all of the players’ complaints and ignored what was obviously a serious issue. And you have to wonder how much this affected the outcome of their season. Not saying without Kane they are a playoff team but certainly seems like everyone would be happier without him and who’s to say that wouldn’t make them a a better team. They certainly haven’t shown much team unity in the past couple seasons.

from Michael Russo and Katie Strang of The Athletic,
The NHLPA and NHL have been engaged in constant discussions about policies and procedures for next season that will satisfy both safety and compliance measures and provide the best chance at being able to complete a full season without any major shutdowns or scheduling snafus. Unlike last season, when the schedule was constructed with some flexibility should outbreaks occur, this season has significantly less maneuverability. Part of that is due to a potentially compressed schedule as a result of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing (a decision on NHL participation is expected to come down later this month), and part of that is due to the desire to play a full NHL schedule to stave off the adverse economic impact COVID has wrought on the league and teams.
When those protocols and policies are agreed upon, they will then be submitted to federal and local governments for consideration. It is not immediately clear whether these protocols and provisions will include any explicit provisions on unvaccinated players and potential loss of pay, but the union informed its members of the possibility last week so as to provide adequate time and information to make plans for the upcoming season.
“It sort of puts the pressure on everyone,” said one player. “You don’t want to be the reason your team plays shorthanded or is forced to be stuck inside your hotel like last season.”

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced that forward Auston Matthews underwent successful wrist surgery earlier today.
Matthews encountered discomfort upon increasing his on-ice training earlier this week. After consultations with specialists and Maple Leafs medical staff, surgery was the recommended course of action. His recovery will be a minimum of six weeks.

from Matt Porter of the Boston Globe,
The day is fast approaching when a whole bunch of new names — Chris Chelios and Mark Messier (ESPN) and Wayne Gretzky (Turner) among them — will appear on our screens to break down games and discuss the league. Network executives will tell you that their hires, particularly Hall of Famers, will bring the heat.
Know what would be good TV?
Chelios and Gary Bettman having a discussion about what’s good for the game. Wonder how much they’d agree.
If they get to talking labor issues, it might get tense. In 1994, as Lockout 1 was under way and those beneath the executive level were losing paychecks, Chelios wondered aloud about Bettman’s safety … and didn’t seem too concerned about it.
“If I was Gary Bettman, I’d worry about my family, about my well-being,” Chelios said. “He’s going to affect a lot of people. Some crazed fan or even a player — who knows? — they might take it into their own hands and figure they get him out of the way, things might get settled. You hate to see something like that happen, but he took the job.”
