In mid-September of 2018, the Ottawa Senators traded away their franchise cornerstone in defenceman Erik Karlsson, shipping him to the San Jose Sharks, with the main piece heading back their way being prospect Josh Norris.
At the time of the trade, Karlsson was viewed as the best defenceman in the game, and for good reason. He was coming off of another impressive season in which he had 62 points in 71 games, and he continued that play in his first season with the Sharks. Unfortunately, the Sharks, who had Stanley Cup aspirations during that 2018-19 season, fell short and haven't been nearly the same since, something Norris alluded to when speaking with media on Wednesday.
«They really went for it getting Karlsson and it didn't work out for them,» Norris said. «But for me its put me here and that's good for me, I couldn't be more happy.»
Whether or not he intended this to be a dig at Karlsson, who's play has fallen off in recent years, as well as the Sharks for trading him, is unknown, but it certainly comes across that way. If he did mean it like that, it is quite the comment given the fact he hasn't done a ton in the league to this point, though he did put together a respectable rookie season in 2020-21 with 17 goals and 35 points in 56 games. It will be interesting to see if he clarifies these comments in the upcoming days given the amount of chatter they have already garnered online.

Brian Witt Wed, October 20, 2021, 8:38 PM Report: Sharks can't void remainder of Kane's contract originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea
The Sharks know they'll be without Evander Kane until at least Nov. 30, after the winger was suspended by the NHL on Monday for 21 games for a violation of COVID-19 protocols. It remains to be seen if he'll be invited back to the team at that time, or if San Jose has something else in mind.
But whatever the Sharks decide, they reportedly will not be able to remove Kane's contract from their books.
"One option they don’t have is the possibility of terminating what’s remaining on Evander Kane’s contract," TSN's Chris Johnson reported on "Insider Trading" Wednesday. "Two sources confirm that the CBA won’t allow for that to happen once Evander has cleared the suspension. Essentially, it’s because the punishment he received here, the 21 games for the COVID-19 protocol violation, is the punishment and so it puts San Jose in a bit of a tough spot.
"I don’t get the sense, at all, that they’ve decided how they’ll proceed going forward here. Perhaps at some point he’s waived and sent to the AHL, maybe they try to pay him to stay home. I think a trade will be pretty difficult at this point in time, but certainly, they can’t terminate that contract."
Kane will not count against the salary cap while he is suspended, which will result in the Sharks getting about $1.7 million in cap relief. Were they able to get out from under the remainder of Kane's contract entirely, they theoretically would be in a position to acquire a high-salaried star player in a trade, such as Buffalo Sabres centerman Jack Eichel. Johnson's report, however, would seem to rule out that possibility.
The Sharks are off to a tremendous start without Kane, having won their first two games. But even if he never rejoins the team this season, they just might be stuck with him.

It's bullshit they cannot terminate, Mike Richards I think was terminated same day (later settled a suit with LA).

And I thought I was getting excited lol. Tremendous is a bit of a overreach at only 2 games.

Ugly hit. Uglier commentary. I think it was more unfortunate than dirty. Penalty...ok Ejection... too far. Hakenpa didn't even extend the knee so I'll call it Karma from the Hertl knee years ago.

This could open a big can of worms
from Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff,
What do Nathan MacKinnon, Mark Scheifele and Jeff Carter have in common?
Aside from being all-world centers, all three are among a handful of vaccinated NHL players who have missed games in the first two weeks of the season for a positive COVID-19 test despite being asymptomatic.
Their absences have wreaked havoc on their teams – from a competitive perspective, with their rosters and salary caps, in addition to a health and lifestyle perspective, triggering additional protocols and restrictions.
That has led to frustration from players and front offices alike.
Change could be on the horizon.
Daily Faceoff has learned the NHL and its team of medical experts are currently debating the merits of testing asymptomatic players.
In other words, it’s possible that the NHL modifies the protocol only to test players and team personnel for COVID-19 who present symptoms.
The parties involved, including the NHL Players’ Association, will be jointly reviewing the testing requirements as of Nov. 1. It’s difficult to predict the likelihood of a protocol change for asymptomatic testing because we’re told even the experts have a split opinion.
