I didn't realize both Letang and Malkin are becoming FA.
The Sharks shouldn't do it. The Jackets should consider it.

Basically it’s going to be a YES SIR GM with his hands tied by 💩 contracts and a owner who thinks they can contend with the garbage

We regret to announce the passing of Jim Pappin at the age of 82. Pappin played parts of 14 NHL seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Black Hawks, California Golden Seals and the Cleveland Barons, recording 278 goals and 295 assists in 767 games. He won the Stanley Cup in 1964 and 1967 with the Toronto Maple Leafs, leading the 1967 playoffs in goals, points game winning goals and scoring the Stanley Cup clinching goal. After retiring he worked as a scout with the Blackhawks, St. Louis Blues and Anaheim Ducks off-and-on before stepping aside in 2019.

Sheng- Whoever the new GM is, he or she will be walking into a challenging situation. The San Jose Sharks are three years and running out of the playoffs, they’re close to capped out and saddled with many long-term veteran contracts, and their prospects pool, by and large, isn’t considered elite. And despite all this, their owner wants to win now.
“I think it makes it one of the least appealing GM jobs out there,” Gregor’s co-host Frank Seravalli offered. “I’ve talked to some people who have interviewed, they say [owner Hasso Plattner is] delusional. He wants this team to be competitive. There’s no retool, no rebuild.
“Right from the hop, it’s how quickly can we make it back to the playoffs right now? What moves can you make this summer to get us there?

Man that’s frustrating. Not surprising but disappointing to see how blind the owner is to the obvious. Whoever the GM is, he doesn’t stand a chance. Also the draft’s in a week… are they planning on having someone in place by then?
Misidentify the situation so you can then mismanage it. All around gonna be a cataclysmic failure. This team in on the verge of a dynasty. Might be a decade before they see the playoffs again.

from Cam Lewis of The Daily Faceoff,
Set to turn 44 years old in a few weeks, it appears Pavel Datsyuk is ready to hang up his skates.
The Detroit Red Wings legend is in Krasnoyarsk, Russia for a charity farewell game being hosted by former NHLer Alexander Semin. Datsyuk told the media at the event that he plans to announce his retirement from professional hockey in the near future.
“Everything is logical, I just haven’t officially announced it yet,” Datsyuk said. “Everything is logical, everyone understands. I will definitely announce, with great pleasure and respect for the fans, for everyone who helped me.”

from Travis Yost of TSN,
But one interesting takeaway is that five years out, the likelihood of a team being inside of the top five is about the same as it is being inside of the bottom five. That is to say: as unique as Colorado’s wildly accelerated rebuild appears to be, it’s similarly unique to be such a poorly performing franchise for so many years.
To that end, it makes some sense why rebuilding organizations like the Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators have a multi-year plan. It takes time. But it doesn’t, and shouldn’t, take forever. At some point, organizational strengths (weaknesses) will manifest themselves. For those who adjudicate the performance of front offices and player development, it gives us a reasonable timeline to work with when it comes to expectations.
Rebuilds take time, but they shouldn’t be endless. And the longer they go on, the more critical we should be of roster-building efforts.
Hello Hasso

Makes sense. You don’t hire a GM and force him to use the old coach. Let him bring his guy in.
