Makes sense. You don’t hire a GM and force him to use the old coach. Let him bring his guy in. My prediction for coach Rob Zettler.

Bob is gone! Friedman- Not sure what’s happening with GM search in SJ, but it appears that the Sharks have made a coaching change. Word late last night was Bob Boughner was informed he will not be returning. It will make no difference. I thought they might keep him one more year so they could blame him for what is to come. How many coaches will this "core" get fired?

SAN JOSE - San Jose Sharks (@sanjosesharks) Interim General Manager Joe Will today announced that the team has relieved Head Coach Bob Boughner, Assistant Coaches John Madden and John MacLean, and Assistant Coach, Video Dan Darrow of their responsibilities.
No replacements are being named at this time.
"As we progress through our search for the next general manager of the Sharks following 19 seasons under Doug Wilson's leadership, it has become apparent that the organization is in the process of an evolution," said Will. "The bottom line is we have missed the playoffs for the past three seasons, which isn't acceptable to our owner, our organization, or to our fans. As part of this evolution and evaluation, we felt it was in the best interest of the club to allow the next Sharks general manager to have full autonomy related to the make-up of the on-ice coaching staff moving ahead.
"I want to thank Bob, John, John and Dan for their dedication and commitment to the Sharks organization. The past two-plus seasons have been extremely challenging - on and off the ice - and Bob and his staff worked admirably under some very difficult circumstances. This change is not an indictment of their performance as much as it is a recognition of the complete organizational reset that we feel is in the best interest of the team at this point."

from Will Stewart and Adam Solomons at the Daily Mail,
A Russian ice hockey star who signed a million-dollar contract with an American team was rounded up by Russian plain-clothes policemen and taken to an army enlistment office yesterday before he's expected to be sent to fight in Ukraine.
Olympian Ivan Fedotov, 25, was reportedly rushed into Putin's army after he was filmed being detained by a squad of officers outside an ice rink in St Petersburg.
The accusation of 'draft dodging' is seen as revenge for his signing to play for NHL team the Philadelphia Flyers.
The top goalie and Olympic silver medalist signed a deal worth $1.1million (£900,000) last month.
Fedotov was formerly with CSKA, a club in the capital with close ties to the Russian military. Its name translates to Central Sports Club of the Army.
News outlet Fontanka reported that he can now be sent to the Russian army rather than the US - but he could also be jailed for alleged draft dodging.

from Sportsnet,
The San Jose Sharks will announce Mike Grier as their new general manager on Tuesday, Sportsnet can confirm. It is believed he will be the first Black man in NHL history to hold the position.
Grier, 47, played 14 seasons in the NHL beginning in 1996, three of them with the Sharks. His last season was with the Buffalo Sabres and he retired from playing in 2011.
Grier replaces interim GM Mike Will, who took over when Doug Wilson stepped away in November of 2021 for medical reasons. Wilson had held the position for 19 years and resigned in April.
The Detroit-born, but Massachusetts-raised Grier has held various non-playing positions since retiring. He spent two seasons behind the bench as an assistant with the New Jersey Devils from 2018 to 2020. A year ago, he was hired as an adviser to hockey operations for the New York Rangers. He has also served as a scout for the Chicago Blackhawks between 2014 and 2018.

If Hasso insists a rebuild is not necessary Grier's hands are tied.

Should be noted that Grier's hiring at this time basically makes his first draft as GM 2023. Obviously he'll get up to speed and down to work as soon as he can but all the groundwork for Thursday has been done already, he's got no ground to make this his own.

I'm generally optimistic abou it, I only wish Grier the best. At least Sharks didn't get some old re-tread 70 year old GM trying to solve problems for yet another franchise. And we didn't end up with Wilson Jr. Grier is relatively young, energetic, very competitive. I'd like to think success now as a GM is very important to Grier, for his career. Extremely unique background, he's been around pro sports front offices since age 4. He's fresh blood, Doug Wilson era definately over. Grier mentioned 'team Cap issues' more than once on today's intro conference. Cap health likely the biggest obstical to the sharks improving their roster. He seems to know it. I'd like to think Grier got a sense of Hasso's philosophy on buy-outs. VERY expensive to buy-out an aging player with 4-5 years left on a bad contract, but they do stand in the way of quick Shark improvement. I think Buying out Adin Hill's remaining year at $2 mil is a no-brainer. then Grier uses that money to re-sign Kaapo Kahkonen. But soon eliminating the longer term 'stale' contracts (Vlasic, Karlsson) might be a financial pipe dream. Then he's also got an entire monor league/farm system to fix. Barracuda were dead last in the AHL by a big margin last season. He's been east for last 5 seasons, he's got to better learn the Western Conference team details again. Also, Sharks need to cross their fingers and hope they win Kane's grivence hearing, which will have a huge 3-year effect on their Cap. Well, here's to the new GM - he's suddenly got a lot of new problems to keep him up at night. Again, good luck. I start out by optimisticly thinking Grier is up to the huge task.

The scouting is all done, but there will be many options at #11 overall (including trade), do you take the big winger, or the smooth skating D-man? I can't see Grier letting Joe Will or Doug Jr. making a final call on that stuff. He's the GM now.
