from Brian Giuffra of the Big Lead,
From his standing desk inside Fox’s expansive urban office on 6th Avenue in Manhattan, Mark Evans surveys the landscape of the future of the sports media world with insight and authority few in the industry possess. For one, he’s the SVP of Sales at Fox Sports, meaning he plays a big role in what happens at one of the largest media companies in the world and has intimate conversations with other powerful people who likewise hold media insights few have. But perhaps even more important than that, Evans has been working in sales for a long time, 25 years at Fox to be exact, starting there around the same time they acquired the rights to air NFL games and rising as the company around him did as well.
“The change in media has been seismic on literally every level,” Evans says. “And there’s more to come.”
During an hour-plus long conversation with The Big Lead, Evans opened the door to several interesting subjects and provided us with insights on everything from the developing relationship between gambling and sports, the future of live sports distribution, and Fox’s role in the current and future of American sports coverage, which is where we’ll start today....
Fox has also expanded its coverage of niche sports like surfing, bowling, car racing and others in addition to its NFL, MLB, FIFA and college football portfolio. So where else could Fox go?
“Hockey,” Evans said. “Hockey’s [TV rights] are up after two more seasons. That could be a place that we’d like to delve back into.”
more but no additional hockey talk...

Sharks have traded Kyle Wood to Hurricanes for Trevor Carrick. Meh, it's an AHL trade. Appears like Barracuda get a little more size & sandpaper in the deal, and another left shot blueliner. Carrick also immediately got a two year contract from DW after the trade. Doubtful Carrick will ever log time with the big Sharks, but Roy gets an anchor D-man he's been needing.

Those California taxes are a bitch
The Anaheim Ducks offered Kevin Shattenkirk a two-year contract with an AAV of ~$2-$2.5 million and he turned it down for one-year and $1.75 million in Tampa Bay, per Dennis Bernstein of The Fourth Period and confirmed by the Athletic.

I doubt taxes played a part. Shattenkirk: "Hmmmm, do I play for a loaded team that is a top contender to win the cup or go play for team under a new coach and starting a rebuild?" Not a very tough choice there.

Sharks season ticket agent called my partner (the Kraut) and invited him out to lunch! I couldn't make it but they had lunch together last week near McCarthy Ranch in Newark. I gave him shit because she's quite cute and in her 20's. He had some issues with playoff tickets and she felt bad. "I wonder how bad she really feels?" he kept saying to me. Ha!
So he gives me her feedback survey sheet to turn in and my #1 request was - construct a 'Beer Only' serving station downstairs. First world problem, but it's SO fucked up to wait in line with other people ordering pizza, well drinks and such. I want a fucking beer at intermission and I don't want to wait 15 minutes. Is that so hard to understand. I want more selection downstairs besides St. Archer IPA, Corona and Coors Light. I have to go upstairs lobby to grab a Lagunitas IPA.
I also made comment about some very rude bartenders downstairs that refuse to process your food/drink credit on your tickets. There's some old school fucks serving drinks downstairs that have no idea we're spending our hard earned dough at games and want service. Also too many in our section don't 'wait for the whistle' any more. Ushers aren't doing their enforcement jobs. Yea, first world problems but he did give me her survey to fill out..

There is a good beer only place downstairs. Its past the BMW lounge and they have a good selection. It is pretty far down but worth the walk.

This is sad
from Jeff Seidel of the Detroit Free Press,
Joe Murphy, the Detroit Red Wings' No. 1 overall draft pick in 1986, wanders outside in a steady rain, eventually finding a place to sleep for the night in the doorway of a small restaurant.
His black tennis shoes are soaking wet and the bottom of his feet have pruned and turned bright white.
Murphy earned more than $13 million while playing 15 seasons in the NHL, but he is homeless again, just like last year. He doesn’t own socks, so he rips a T-shirt into strips and wraps them around his ankles.
“These are my socks right now,” Murphy says. “My feet have gone all white. Freakin’ nasty. I don’t need to remove my toes, I don’t think. But it’s going to be stinging and nasty, right?”
Dozens of people have tried to get Murphy off the streets of this small tourist town the past two years, including the NHL Alumni Association, members of the local police department, former teammates, his lawyer and an entire team of mental health experts and social workers. He refuses almost all of it.

This is smart. Take away the brokers profit
from Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times,
Seattle’s NHL team is still more than two years from taking the ice, but officials are already moving to stop what they call “ticket brokers’’ from stockpiling an inventory of KeyArena seats.
Starting Wednesday, NHL Seattle plans to contact suspected brokers who’ve reserved season tickets and tell them they can’t have them all. Fans in March 2018 were able to make deposits of $500 or $1,000 per ticket and between 32,000 and 33,000 were actually reserved in fewer than 48 hours before the list was capped.
“We’re going to go through our list and try to identify any prospective brokers on the list,’’ NHL Seattle president and CEO Tod Leiweke said Tuesday. “And then we’re going to pick up the phone and talk to them. Our aim is to not have brokers camping out on our list, buying tickets solely for the purpose of reselling.’’
Leiweke said the team should begin inviting fans to actually buy tickets this fall – possibly in late October. The delay in converting deposits into actual tickets is just one of several items the team has continuously postponed since the NHL franchise was awarded last December.

I think I had a run-in with that bartender. Yea? i tell you, a few of those big senior bartenders downstairs need to be flipped upstairs to serve hot dogs and the young sharp kids transfer downstairs, pour me quick Draft beers and call me 'Sir.' those old fucks that think they bar-tend at the Mark fkn Hopkins, hint at a $20 tip for every lazy step they take - can hit the road IMO.
Hope you make it to another Tank game this season 96!

ELMONT, N.Y. -- The New York state board responsible for economic development has approved a $1.3 billion project to build a 19,000-seat arena for the New York Islanders at Belmont Park.
Newsday reports the six members of the Empire State Development board voted Thursday in favor of the complex that will include shops, restaurants and a hotel.
The project on state-owned property would allow the Islanders to move from Brooklyn to Elmont, in Nassau County, while creating thousands of new jobs.
However, some residents of surrounding communities are worried about increased traffic and noise.
The state Franchise Oversight Board must still approve an environmental review. That could happen in the coming weeks.
The arena project was first announced by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in December 2017.
