oh JT will be back. we can survive a few defensive gaffs, will be good as a 3C and never underestimate the constant positive chirps sounding in 'the room'. Sounds like Jumbo has re-upped on a one year deal as expected. Terms not yet available. SAN JOSE, CA - San Jose Sharks (@sanjosesharks) General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has agreed to terms with Center Joe Thornton to a one-year contract. "Words cannot equate the impact that Joe has had on this franchise since his arrival in San Jose in 2005," said Wilson. "Joe is a generational player who seemingly blazes past an existing Hall-of-Famer with each game he plays. His leadership and dedication to the organization and his teammates is inspiring. He has the rare ability to make the players around him better and we're excited to see him healthy and back wearing the Sharks crest." Last season, Thornton registered 51 points (16 goals, 35 assists) in 73 games with San Jose, finishing seventh on the Sharks in assists, eighth in points and tied for fourth in game-winning goals. Reports say $2M.

from NHL.com,
Four women officials will experience NHL action for the first time this weekend.
Referees Katie Guay and Kelly Cooke and linesmen Kirsten Welsh and Kendall Hanley, four of the 96 officials who participated in the 2019 NHL Exposure Combine, have been selected to officiate rookie tournaments in Irvine, California; Buffalo; Nashville and Traverse City, Michigan. A total of 30 officials from the combine were selected to work the rookie tournaments.
The Exposure Combine, held in Buffalo during the last weekend in August, can best be described as a scouting combine for prospective officials. It is also a crucial stepping stone in the journey for many officials landing a job in professional hockey whether it be at the American Hockey League or ECHL level or in North American junior hockey leagues.

Not bringing back Marleau makes sense but in the same way, not bringing back Thornton would too. With Pavelski gone and Marleau a non-option why not just go all the way? Jumbo is a bigger contributor at this point and a much bigger influence on the whole than Patty but maybe it’s time to turn the team completely over. Idiot.

from Michael Traikos of the National Post,
“There are no good guys or bad guys,” said Bettman, smiling. “This is a relationship and we’ve lived with each for a long time and we’re going to continue to live with each other. We’re not looking to position ourselves as the good guys. There are no good guys or bad guys. There’s just people trying to do what they think is right.”
What’s right, according to Bettman, is labour peace. That’s why the NHL declined to opt out of the current collective bargaining agreement last week. In doing so, the NHL moved toward three more seasons of uninterrupted hockey.
That is, as long as the NHLPA follows suit and also declines opting out of the current arrangement before the Sept. 15 deadline.
“The puck is in their end,” said Bettman. “We made the decision that we thought was the best decision for the game, namely labour peace. And it’s now up to the Players’ Association to decide what they want to do on the 15th. I don’t want to do or say anything that might influence their decision. It’s an important decision they have to make and we’ll see what they do.”

from Emily Kaplan & Greg Wyshynski of ESPN,
The NHL has dropped Jogmo World Corp. as a primary technology partner in its player and puck tracking plans, but vows to have the highly anticipated data collection system up and running by the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
"We're in the process of making a switch," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman told ESPN on Thursday. "Jogmo had some organizational and financial challenges which we were concerned about at the offset, but actually came to fruition. We have a new partner who can do it and we're very confident that that hasn't slowed us down."
A league source said that technology company SMT is the league's new partner.
continued and the target date for having tracking in place is this season's playoffs...

Their problem is what to track: what is useful, and what is noise. Instead they tried to track what they can, like that cat licking his balls.
Standard situation in any technology company.

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,
There was no press release issued here at Bruins headquarters at the edge of Lake Erie.
Back in Boston, where his Bruins stand ready to enter the 2019-20 NHL season (home opener Oct. 12), Jeremy Jacobs is still considered by fans and players to be the guy who owns the entire Black and Gold — kit, caboodle, and cash register.
Nope. Not anymore.
The billionaire Delaware North concession czar, who will turn 80 in January, revealed to the Globe that he has signed over his Original Six franchise to his three sons (Jerry Jr., Lou, and Charlie) and three daughters (Lisann, Lynn, and Katie).
The consortium of Jacobs progeny, including Boston-area residents Charlie and Lynn, is expected to maintain ownership and the running of the franchise in perpetuity, all part of a long-planned succession that the senior Jacobs said he finally executed earlier this year.
“I have given it to my kids,” said Jacobs. “They are paying me some of the proceeds that come out of this. It happened this year. This was done on the basis that the longevity is going to continue in the hands of the Jacobs children, and the next generation will have it.

Jake Gardiner to Canes, 4y/16.2M. That Carolina blue line is pretty loaded. I mean. Our blueline should be ok too but with the space we have I feel like we could have made that work and all of a sudden you are stacked with a reserve into the post season. Hell you can likely rest Braun or any given blue liner to manage wear and tear and still ice a great blue line on a given night.

M Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking. If your aren't spending the money at forward because you are handing over to the younger players, you could have had a blue line like - Vlassic - Karlsson Simek/Gardiner - Burns Dillon - Braun/Gardiner I know he's a lefty but I suspect the above gives you a rock solid lineup even with the occasional missed game from anyone in the top 6. Would be a huge asset in the regular season and especially in the post season.

seeing JT play one final year will definately add a LOT to following the Sharks his season. - With just 16 goals, JT could move from #86 all-time goals to #74. Tight pack of ledgends around his current 413 goals. - With playing 70 more games, Joe could move from current #12 All-time games to #9 all-time. - JT would need 53 points this season to reach the next rung of All-time points, Currently he's #14. Paul Coffey is #13. A stretch to reach that one.

We could have compensated some for the 60 goals we lost to free agency at the forward position tis summer, from the back end alone.
