The Columbus Blue Jackets have re-signed defenceman Zach Werenski to a three-year, $15 million contract, with an AAV of $5 million
The first two years of the contract are worth $4 million and the 3rd is worth $7 million, meaning making Werenski has a one-year, $7 million qualifying offer waiting for him when this contract expires and that walks him right into UFA status.

Question. is the 'NHL Channel' same as Center Ice (is that still offered?) or the same as NHL Network? thinking of getting extra hockey this season and wondering how fellow hockey geeks here get their tv hockey delivered. Currently only use Comcast sports channels.
I'm thinking it's impossiple to watch all the hockey those channels deliver. Cover other leagues? But I also heard it's about $9 a month (?) so WTF..

You can check your providers. The actual value of center ice should be only about 150 dollars. Most will offer a way to pay in one shot which saves over the monthly plans they try to put you on. When I did DTV last year I think I paid for 5 months at something like 40 dollars, so in the end I paid 50 more. This year im with Cox and plan to do the 150 one shot fee and be done with it.

($24/mo.) Can't trust goof-ball hockey rink rumors about $9/mo. so you get 40 out of market games per week, which works out to about 5 games a night - I can't watch that much. 12 games per week will be in true 4K HD. Wish they had a 'light' package or just select 3-4 teams out of your market you could follow. that would be cool. But seems it's the 'firehose' approach or nothing, too bad. also found out about Center Ice *free* trial for first 18 days of season (Oct 7th thru 24th) this season. Looks like you have to call comcast to get the trial turned on though. woth a call Id think.

from Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet,
- I’m very curious to see if, as part of the new CBA, NHL teams get the right to send some 19-year-old Canadian Junior picks to the AHL.
- Teams are currently mandated to play between six and eight exhibition games, with rules in place to make sure they don’t show up with a Tuesday night beer-league squad. I polled players about how many exhibition games they think they should be playing, and only Nikolaj Ehlers and Patrick Kane said four, preferring to play instead of practice. Everyone else went the other way, with no one going more than three.
“The last two for sure — maybe one more,” Derek Stepan said....
- There is at least one NHL team considering having its NHL roster together right from the start — rather than mixing the groups — for practice purposes. The fivethirtyeight article said the NFL’s pre-season future might be controlled scrimmages instead of games. Dubas said he’s wondered about that. “I don’t know how you do that in hockey…. Maybe coaches who have a good relationship in separate conferences is the way to go.”
- It was noticeable how hard Buffalo and Boston prospects went after Jack Hughes in their rookie games. A preview of what he will deal with this season.
more, including RFA talk...

from Frank Seravalli of TSN,
On Monday, Zach Werenski provided hope – if not a path forward – that all can be resolved on time, at least for the big-name RFA defencemen still unsigned.
The forwards such as Mitch Marner, Brayden Point, Mikko Rantanen and Matthew Tkachuk? They’re another matter of finance entirely. But the structure of Werenski’s deal may have given all a reason to raise an eyebrow.
Werenski, 22, signed a three-year, $15 million deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was arguably the price-setter for the RFA market on defence, the leading comparable for both Philadelphia’s Ivan Provorov and Boston’s Charlie McAvoy.
What's interesting is Werenski is scheduled to earn $4 million in each of the next two seasons, followed by $7 million in the last year of the deal in 2021-22.
That means that the Blue Jackets must offer Werenski a qualifying offer of at least $7 million to retain his rights into 2022-23 as a restricted free agent.

Bob McKenzie ✔ @tsnbobmckenzie · Sep 9, 2019 One agent observing the RFA dynamic with NHL training camps set to open this week: “We’re going to try to do in two or three days what we haven’t been able to do in two or three months.”
The opening of camp is not by any means a hard deadline but it is a pressure point of sorts.
Bob McKenzie ✔ @tsnbobmckenzie One NHL GM observing RFA gridlock as well as today’s signing of Zach Werenski (CBJ) to 3-yr, $5M AAV contract: “It seems there’s a growing appetite, on both sides (club and player), to maybe solve the problem by kicking the can down the road (bridge deals). Market seems in flux.”

Again, center ice will give you more than NHL network. It gives you a slew of channels that play all games each night. That's how I get the sharks out of Market. I totally agree it would be awesome to have a 1 team pass or something. 50 bucks and I get sharks games, 175 and you get all games. Something like that. But I guess Bettman wants to fuck us over which is nothing new.
