Joe Thornton was an advocate for San Jose to bring back Patrick Marleau this season, and when the team traded Marleau to a contender and didn't move Thornton along with him, it appears it struck a cord with the veteran.
Joe Thornton: “As you get older you realize you only have so many shots at this thing, and it would have been nice to have a chance. ... I wanted a shot. I’ve been hunting this thing down for 22 years.” — Kevin Kurz (@kkurznhl) February 25, 2020
Sharks GM, Doug Wilson had this to say on the matter: Joe was very involved in the process and was willing to explore it. Ultimately it didn't come to fruition.
Thornton went on to mention: I really don't know why. Obviously the teams went in different directions. That's obviously what happened because I'm still here and still a Shark, which I'm happy to be. I wanted another shot at the Cup, I'm getting a little older. It's not my last hurrah, I still think I've got years left. Obviously I was willing to go somewhere and try to win my first Stanley Cup. I've been dreaming about that forever, since I can remember.

What is his record with picks? Tim Burke was in that position up until a couple years ago. Sharks drafting hasn’t been great but it is all a gamble come draft day. Every team has some bad picks and busts and every team has some gems. The Sharks hit a home run with Pavs and Clowe. The Hertl draft was a home run until Brown took out his knee on a deliberate dirty hit. They have picked up role guys like Manny Malhotra in free agency. The Thorton deal was a home run. The Burns deal was very good. They have put a competitive team on the ice for a very long time. You have to give them credit for that. Its been a fun ride but this team now needs to be rebuilt. The one constant has been poor goalie selections. Thomas Greiss begs to differ.

But frankly, I have no sentiments for both Patty and Jumbo. Maybe I haven't been the fan long enough. But the fanfare of their extension early in the year 2013 - which already looked like an overpayment and a dubious move, which was followed by the reverse sweep killed any affection that might've begun forming.

Don't forget Dougie Jr is running the scouting Dept so you know that this pick with be a player we never heard of & a bust What is his record with picks? Every team has some bad picks and busts and every team has some gems. They picked Timo Meier with the 10th pick & passed on Matthew Barzal who went 15th I believe. he Sharks already had Hertl a so called power forward, What they could of had with Barzal is Speed, Craftiness & playmaking. Now they got Hertl, Kane & Meier the same kind of player, Oh well What's done is done.

After reverse sweep I was everyone out. It made me ill to look at this team. Then somehow they went all the way to the finals. I could not have been more shocked. So I am like Sgt. Schultz.

The Merkley pick a couple years ago made me wonder if they made a philosophical shift in scouting when they switched to DWJR.

Nothing recently. Jury is out on Merkley. Might be a stud, might be a dud. Don’t see much middle ground with him. Guess it depends how we define gem. Going back they traded up for Couture which turned out to be quite smart. A lot of fans didn’t like that move, and/or pick. Hertl wasn’t very different. Vlasic in the second round was a great ROI. Also found solid contributors in late rounds like Bonino, Braun, Labanc, and Demers. Drafting and development has been this team’s fatal flaw for a long time, not trying to defend it but making a point that a new guy is in charge now and after two years it’s not fair to judge his work just yet. Perhaps he’s just a puppet for those who came before him but I don’t know of any evidence pointing to that and it’s a different conversation entirely.

I think the comments have been blown way out of proportion. Kurz is a super dishonest journalist that like most of the mainstream media, writes/videos interviews/articles in a way, to create controversy out of nothing. For the drafting, one could argue that the team has had low/limited drafting from "the successful seasons". But at some point (I have no drafting or scouting experiences) some of the duds had to have been a little obvious i.e. not drafting Kopitar when the chance was there?

That's what you get for the reverse sweep and for a $8M contract at the age of 38 and a $5M contract at the age of 39 and an injured knee.

How would the hockey writers live without Toronto: If Thornton is not sold on the Sharks, and he’s willing to seek out new life (boldly go where no one has gone before), my prediction is Toronto will be a factor. I can’t confirm this, but I believe the Maple Leafs considered adding him now.
... Thornton’s made it clear he will make his salary fit.
when you combine the interest the Leafs had in Thornton, with the this last minute push, and Thornton’s desire to move on from San Jose, it seems unfortunate that something couldn’t have been worked out there.
Joe Thornton should've made his salary fit between 2017 and 2019 seasons, when he fleeced Dougie for $15M.

From Elliot Freidman
3. Boy, it was tough reading those Joe Thornton quotes on Tuesday.
“It would have been nice to at least have a chance,” he told reporters in Philadelphia. “I wanted a shot, you know? Believe it or not. I’ve been hunting this thing down for 22 years, so I wanted another shot at it…. Back to the grind, and that’s how it is.”
Sharks GM Doug Wilson made it clear that interested parties had to be legit Stanley Cup contenders to make the pitch. I heard Boston never went far down the road, and the Dallas interest wasn’t huge. Thornton’s hilarious personality obscures his burning pride/desire, but don’t kid yourself — it’s there.
San Jose’s plan is to return to contention in 2020-21, and the big question is if Jumbo Joe believes the Sharks can do it. If he doesn’t, he’s going to have to consider breaking his comfort zone. Patrick Marleau’s speed makes him an easier fit for a mid-season switch. Thornton’s gifts — his intelligence and skill — are harder to translate at this time of year, but I do think there are teams who would be willing to make it work if he started the season with them.
4. If Thornton is not sold on the Sharks, and he’s willing to seek out new life (boldly go where no one has gone before), my prediction is Toronto will be a factor. I can’t confirm this, but I believe the Maple Leafs considered adding him now. Two things stopped it: 1) their decision not to make short-term fixes after the Carolina loss, and 2) are they really a legit contender if they have to go through Boston or Tampa Bay or both? When GM Kyle Dubas said he wanted to see how his group would respond to its tough stretch, he meant it. Thornton would have eased the tension right now, but the organization wants to see how everyone top to bottom reacts and performs. Next season is a different story.
5. Thornton’s made it clear he will make his salary fit. He’s a left-hand shot who could feed Auston Matthews/John Tavares from his strong side. (They have spent plenty of time with Zach Hyman and William Nylander on their weak sides, although both have had strong seasons.) There’s the Greyhound connection. People forget, too, that Thornton’s been through the ringer. The first playoff series I covered for Hockey Night in Canada was Boston/Montreal 2004, where the Canadiens came back from 3–1 down to win. Thornton came under huge criticism with articles demanding he be stripped of his captaincy. He survived and will walk into the Hall of Fame. Good message for Toronto’s young core. Anyway, something to chew on.
