Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic looks at some of the top stories sure to be of interest after the season.
One of the topic is coaches...
I can’t remember the last offseason that featured this many quality free-agent head coaches.
Gerard Gallant, Bruce Boudreau, Peter Laviolette and Mike Babcock are just sitting there. That’s crazy.
We have interim coaches in San Jose, Dallas, Minnesota, New Jersey and Calgary, giving us five potential openings. We have to see what happens in Detroit, and of course, the potential of first-round upsets in the playoffs can also lead to coaching changes.
Add on to that, the yet-to-be-filled vacancy behind the bench for expansion Seattle. Now, GM Ron Francis had told me back in the fall that his coaching hiring window was likely to fall between January and June 2021, which makes sense. But does Francis, with ownership backing, want to fast-forward that process to get his hands on one of these four guys?
more (paid) on this topic plus other topics too...

Dougie won't hire a new coach because he needs a fall guy when he fails in the draft and free agency this offseason

Joe didn't look like he wanted to fight. Yup Krejci wanted that a lot more than Pavs did. I cannot understand how the Bs always seem to get into fights where they have the advantage. Why don’t those other guys turtle like they do against every other team? Why doesn’t anyone do it to them? Like seriously how has no one suckered Marchand yet while he acts like a tough guy jumping non-fighters and Euros?

From Elliot Friedman
3. Boy, it was tough reading those Joe Thornton quotes on Tuesday.
“It would have been nice to at least have a chance,” he told reporters in Philadelphia. “I wanted a shot, you know? Believe it or not. I’ve been hunting this thing down for 22 years, so I wanted another shot at it…. Back to the grind, and that’s how it is.”
Sharks GM Doug Wilson made it clear that interested parties had to be legit Stanley Cup contenders to make the pitch. I heard Boston never went far down the road, and the Dallas interest wasn’t huge. Thornton’s hilarious personality obscures his burning pride/desire, but don’t kid yourself — it’s there.
San Jose’s plan is to return to contention in 2020-21, and the big question is if Jumbo Joe believes the Sharks can do it. If he doesn’t, he’s going to have to consider breaking his comfort zone. Patrick Marleau’s speed makes him an easier fit for a mid-season switch. Thornton’s gifts — his intelligence and skill — are harder to translate at this time of year, but I do think there are teams who would be willing to make it work if he started the season with them.
4. If Thornton is not sold on the Sharks, and he’s willing to seek out new life (boldly go where no one has gone before), my prediction is Toronto will be a factor. I can’t confirm this, but I believe the Maple Leafs considered adding him now. Two things stopped it: 1) their decision not to make short-term fixes after the Carolina loss, and 2) are they really a legit contender if they have to go through Boston or Tampa Bay or both? When GM Kyle Dubas said he wanted to see how his group would respond to its tough stretch, he meant it. Thornton would have eased the tension right now, but the organization wants to see how everyone top to bottom reacts and performs. Next season is a different story.
5. Thornton’s made it clear he will make his salary fit. He’s a left-hand shot who could feed Auston Matthews/John Tavares from his strong side. (They have spent plenty of time with Zach Hyman and William Nylander on their weak sides, although both have had strong seasons.) There’s the Greyhound connection. People forget, too, that Thornton’s been through the ringer. The first playoff series I covered for Hockey Night in Canada was Boston/Montreal 2004, where the Canadiens came back from 3–1 down to win. Thornton came under huge criticism with articles demanding he be stripped of his captaincy. He survived and will walk into the Hall of Fame. Good message for Toronto’s young core. Anyway, something to chew on.

The problem with sucker punching Marchand is the NHL big wigs would have that player suspended for 10 games. Jeromy Jacobs runs the NHL not the big shots in New York. You mess with his players and he's on the phone before Marchand even gets up from the ice.

The rest of the NHL would probably give donations to cover the financial loss and whoever does it would be a hero to 95% of the fans and players.

from Dan Rosen of NHL.com,
The NHL general managers will discuss the state of the game, examine and possibly recommend new rule changes and evaluate recent rule changes at their annual March meetings which begin Monday and run through Wednesday.
The GMs will have a full general meeting Monday morning followed by group sessions designed to generate conversations and ideas that can be brought back into the main group meeting Tuesday.
Potential rule change recommendations, should there be any, would likely be announced either Tuesday or Wednesday.
"These three days of meetings always present us with an opportunity to evaluate our game and our on-ice product in a thorough and detailed way," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said. "These are the guys [the GMs] that live the game every day and every night over an extended nine-month period. They have the pulse of what's working in the game, and what could be improved. And their insights are critical, if not essential, to all of the game-related decisions we make at the League level."
